I was backing the car in and out of our drive and at a pinch point managed to catch the nearside on a bracket screwed to the wall. I had been meaning to remove it for a long time and have now paid the price for my apathy.

The rear door has a couple of small dents and a horizontal indentation about 40 cms long just below the window by the horizontal body line, the front door has just been caught on the trailing edge. Having dropped off the load I called by a friend in the village when I saw his workshop light on, he is a classic car restorer and body specialist. he reckoned about £550-750 but it would take some skill to sort out the damage. Many shops would just put a new door or skin on and that could up the cost quite a bit. I also sent photos to another chum who reckoned the best bet was a new door as unless it was perfect a slight ripple would always be evident. He suggested about £600 plus another door from the scrapper in the right colour.

Having never had an at fault claim in 49 years i am unsure as to how to pursue this. I could pay for it myself and maintain my blemish free record and lowish insurance premium (I am with LV). Looking at the numbers and they way they might stack up I am thinking that with a £150 excess and a premium in the order of £250, it could be worth taking the hit and making a claim. The additional benefit being that it is sorted swiftly and with less hassle on my part.

I have no experience in this area and before progressing any further I would welcome any thoughts as to the best next steps. I have already booked my Specsavers appointment.

Thanks

It sounds like the total repair even using people you know (luckily i too have a handy place for such events) is knocking on the door of £1000, might be worth asking around people you know for alternative bodyshops, one man and his dog type places where you arnt paying for layers of admin deep pile carpets and fancy coffee.

That figure is my guide line of whether to claim on my insurance policy for such an event, so from what you describe i'd be claiming, i assume you have a protected policy so will only lose one 'life' as it were, so you should keep full NCD, and the type of incident shouldn't really trigger any hefty premium increases come renewal, even if you don't have protection the premium increases plus loss of some NCD shouldn't be too drastic.

Course if you happened to find another Avensis breaking with two perfect doors, and in the right colour to boot (unlikely), at a reasonable price, that could change things considerably.

Through the insurer you will get a basic courtesy car, you might be car-less for a week or more getting it fixed by your mate.

I'm not big on having doors reskinned, they seldom prove as rust resistant as originals, but if it needed a new skin your mate being a classic restorer is a better bet than most normal bodyshops IMO.

How old is the car? The newer it is the best plan is to spend or claim IMO.

Local taximan I speak to whilst picking up grandchild has 2 doors creased by

someone reversing into him whilst he was parked - Superb.

He got £2,000 IIRC for his car & he kept it (delighted!!) - 2 x doors from scrappy, 1 right colour & 1 spayed - he was some £400.

It's OK from 10 yards away but dubious close up - but then again the car has done nearly 200K - as long as it passes the Council test he is happy.

Thank you both for your comments. The car is a 65reg 26k miler, a newish car intended to be kept for the foreseeable future, hence a quality repair is desirable. I have checked out the cost of doors from a breaker, which would be a cheaper option assuming a colour match, but a call to LV tomorrow is the option of choice I think. Looking at the damage again this morning it doesn’t look so bad in the cold light of day, but I know it’s there and would always annoy me. Hopefully sorted soon.

A quick update. The car was collected by the insurers nominated repairer on Thursday morning, I was telephoned that afternoon to be told it would take no longer than a week to fix. In fact it was returned to my home address yesterday afternoon in pristine condition having been washed and vacuumed as well as, of course, having the minor damage fixed.

The repairer was very efficient, paperwork was at a minimum and I paid the excess by debit card when arranging delivery. Excellent service from LV and their repairer, ABL of Portsmouth. No doubt a little pain awaits at renewal, but such is the consequence of my lack of judgement.
