I'm thinking of changing the wheels (and hub-caps) on my 98R 306 LD to something a bit wider. Current wheels have 175/70 R13 tyres fitted, and I've found some wheels for 185/60 R14 tyres. Is the overall diameter different of the two tyres and hence there will be speed / distance implications for the odometer ?

Try here:
www.toyo.co.uk/converter/converter.html
Or for your particular car
www.toyo.co.uk/converter/table7.html
185/60 tyres are almost exactly the same diameter as 175/70s (only 1mm difference) so you won't need to adjust the speedo at all.

I've now got the replacement wheels. I just want to confirm that it is the 185/60 14's that I need to buy as these are the closest overall diameter to my current wheels (as per toyo.co.uk), but not Peugeot standard tyre size for the 14" rim on the 306(which is 185/65 14). Middleman said that I was just upgrading to the TD spec. wheels, but in fact I would be going to something inbetween. According to toyo.co.uk the /65 tyre would be 19mm larger in diameter compared to 1mm for the /60.
/60 or /65 ??
Thanks,

Dan - you've had some comments about appearance but not about the odometer. This doesn't measure distance, it counts wheel revolutions and converts to distance. The circumference of the wheel is about 1750-1800 mm. If your new tyres will be 20mm more in diameter, that is about 63mm more in circumference or a bit over 3%. Fitting those wheels will probably (in my limited experience) roughly cancel out the built-in overindication of speed, and cause a 1-2% overestimation of distance. Similar to the variation that occurs between new tyres and those on the wear limit (10mm less in diameter).

dude
the difference in overall tire & wheel diameter is exactly 2.4mm larger with 185/60/14.
Do try these configuration, you should have better handling from what expected from a Peugeot.

Dan what you are doing is just going from the standard 1.4 petrol fitment to that of the TD.
Good idea, the 306 looks under-tyred on the 13" rims and you'll notice a real grip/handling improvement.
1.4 ZXs are similarly improved by upgrading to the 14" wheels from a TD.
Last time I bought a set of 5 wheels from the breakers (all with OE fit Michelin tyres 4-7mm tread) for £60.

'under-tyred' is a very good phrase, but doesn't emphasise how ridiculous the car looks on wheels that look more like £1 coins !
On the insurance issue, can it be argued that there is no increase in value of the car with slightly wider standard Peugeot steel wheels, and no increase in performance ? Who's to know they weren't factory fitted anyway ?

To add to the sugestions already put forward, don\'t forget to inform your insurance company of the modification.
