Oil light stays on - 1.3 HCS Escort - mfarrow
Hi,

I'm a little concerned by the amount of time the oil light stay on on my 1.3 HCS Escort. Is the light meant to go STRAIGHT off when you start the engine? Mine stays on for 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?

I use Halfords oil filters, 10W40 oil and STP oil treatment.

ooops, forgot to say oil is semi-synth. :-)

As long as it goes out and stays out, it should be OK. It should say in the owners handbook it's acceptable for the oil light to flicker at idle on a high mileage engine, does this happen?

It may be fitted with the wrong oil filter allowing oil to drain back into sump when parked, this has to then be filled when started (2-3secs!).

doesn't flicker at idle, just when fired up. Car's 'only' done 51k.

Don't use Halfords filters (made by Wipac). The anti-drain valve does not seat properly as the material relaxes after exposure to hot oil. Best filters are Mann & Hummel or Fram. I spent a long and messy time at Lucas sectioning used filters, and contrary to some opinions on this site, I found many were poor. The Lucas (Crossland) filter had swarf in the thread!

How long ago was your work done? See the thread below which contains a a reply from Halfords on source of their own lable filters.

Might be worth while either replacing, or cleaning the oil pressure switch in case it's got some crud in the end of it.

You really need to measure the oil pressure at start up and at 3000 rpm or so. This should either identify a problem, filter, Pressure sensor, or put your mind at rest. Regards Peter

Sorry forgot, How quickly does the light come back on when you turn it off. ??? You can test the switch, when removed with regulated compressed air if you have access to same. Peter

Doesn't take long (1/2 Hour?) for the light to come on again when restarting. Does anyone know where the pressure switch is? Haynes manual for 80-90 useless. Orion manual for 80-90 useless. Haynes 75-80 manual tells us where the switch is for the old OHV engine, but they've moved it since then :-(.

Cheers

Whay do you mean 1/2 and hour. If that is the case you have a damaged switch that is slow to open the contact 2 to 3 secs and 1/2 an hour to close again. Explain please you may have found your problem. Usuall ythe oil light hase come back on within a second or two after the engine has stopped and you have got the ignition back on. Regards Peter

oh, I meant it takes 1/2 hour after stopping the engine for the 2-3 second fault to re-appear (at a guess), i.e. the light not going off straight away.

Sorry should\'ve understood your question right. Light comes on after stopping engine almost instantaneously.

I don't think there's any problem, as long as the light goes out and stays out within 5 seconds of startup. I used to own an Escort with the 1.3 HCS engine (carb) and it did precisely the same thing, from 60K up until well over 100K miles.

Not sure about the merits of semi-synth in such an old-tech engine, but my experience suggests that with regular oil changes, and long journeys, these units rattle on for a long time.

Hi

The only reason these hcs engines rattle is cause of the rocker assy (complete sys not just tappets)

some hcs escorts and fiestas sound like singer sewing machines at idle and at speed

I own a hcs fiesta so iam laughing at myself

I thought I'd just update this old thread.

After my switch change (see www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=29...1 ) I can confirm it wasn't the switch, as it still takes a few seconds for the light to go off (even using Ford oil filters). So I still don't know what causes this.

WHat happens is when the engine stops the oil drains out of the engine internals into the sump (your half hour after stopping).

IF the engine was new with manaufacturer's tolerances, when you start it up - oil drain or not - the oil pump would create sufficient pressure to extinguish the oil warning light immediately - or within 0.5 secs or so.

Your engine is not new, and there will be wear on main bearings and on the camshaft. So when the engine starts the oil pump (assuming it is in perfect condition) will have to pump oil to replace all that has drained away plus fill up the larger tolerances (gaps) caused by wear.

If maintenance has been neglected in the past the oil pump may also be badly worn: even if not neglected there will be some wear.

As a result you will see several seconds before pressure builds up.

That's my explanation:-)

Thanks madf

I've had the car since 47k and it's been serviced every 6 months since (now at 60k). The previous owner used it as a shopping trolley though it was serviced every year. Do you think it's worth rebuilding the oil pump with a new rotor?

I just don't understand it as I know someone with an 80k 1.1 that hasn't ever seen a service in the 15k and 2 years he's had it, and has run out of oil once (wouldn't start), yet his oil light goes off straight away!
Oil light stays on - madf
If it has not been serviced in 15k miles the oil will be solid with carbon and will never drain . One day it will go bang and seize.

If you are reallly worried, use a 20-50 oil rather than a 10-40.. it will tend to drain less readily.

I would not worry about rebuilding the oil pump. My son's 1.1 Fiesta has the same problem for the last 20k miles and is still going strong!

I wouldnt't worry about it, provided it stays out at idle when the engine is hot, and there are no other untoward noises from the engine. Make sure it has gone out before you move off though! Your mate's engine is probably so sludged up that it quickly fills with oil and comes up to pressure - flow is probably well restricted though.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
