Land Rover Range Rover Sport - 6 months and still no service history - sad r rover

bought an 09 range rover sport 3.6tdv8 at the end of november 2015 of a local car dealer with 3 months warranty and FSH ( supposedly !!)

so after about a week or two i realise the FSH isint in the folder so i pop round the the dealer and ask where it is... sorry cant find it, so im told to call back after xmas and we should have it sorted. ok i call back...

call back mid jan nope still cant get it, give us few more weeks...

call back few times more since then to hear "sorry we cant get it " "they wont give it to us or you ie land rover in glasgow" " sure you dont need a service history here in NI no one really cares about them"

what do i do now,im trying to be civil/paitient with the guy but quickly feeling he's mugging me off. do i have any comeback

what are my options.

Fewer options now than if you'd acted within the first 30 days - you could have rejected the car and got your money back.

I'm not even sure if the CRA applies in Northern Ireland.

Even if it does, the time for rejection is past.

If you lived in England or Wales, the solution would be to take the trader to Small Claims Court for the difference in value between a vehicle with full SH, and one with no record of SH. For which you'd really need to get a professional to determine that figure.

I haven't a clue about the legalities.

In practicle terms i'd get it serviced now if it hasn't been already in your ownership.

It might be worth getting Landrover to do this service (even if you usually use someone else) or at least chat them up about ongoing servicing work, and during said flirting ask about the previous history on their system...depending on how they respond and what information they can give you, even if they won't confirm by print out, you can decide if paying their prices is worth it.

If no history is forthcoming at all then if it were me i'd forget the dealership completely find a good LR specialist and get them to go right through the car assuming nothing has been done at all prior to this, get all transmission fluids replaced etc.

The specialist will have a good idea how well or not this car has been looked after prior to this, i have faith in good make specialist indies because my experience has been good so far.

If you keep the car for several years and you have a file of good ongoing regular care to produce to a prospective buyer you might find you have a better service history than most cars which get dealer servicing during the warranty period and then various periods of neglect as subsequent owners, some of whom might be quite shocked how much a car like this costs to maintain correctly do the basics only if that.

Have you gone into a LR dealer yourself or rung LR customer services? You may find the garage you bought the car from may not have tried too hard and with a bit of detective work you can get the SHistory, even a summary printout would be good...

but i did bring it up with them within 30 days wont that count

surely they misrepresented the sale by not giving me the FSH i wouldnt have bought it otherwise.

ill go see him later

It doesn't matter if you brought it up within 30 days or not. If you did not reject it in that time then the full right to reject expires at 30 days.

As I've said, if they won't provide you with the SH, then your best option is to find out what difference would be between the value with a SH, and without. You then sue the dealer in court for that sum.

Can we all take the blinkers off now please?

You are not going to get the info you want from the seller, you are being fobbed off.

As ever, good legal advice in thoery, but in practice.....hopeless!

What you need to do is check out how the small claims court works and decide if the process, the cost and the wait is worth it to you. In my area of the country I would expect maybe £300 and 6-8 months, yours may differ. Maybe even take a bit of professional advice on the subject from a local solicitor. Then and even if you do win the case, hope the seller has the abilty to pay up. The most you can hope for is the difference in value having a FSH would have on the vehicle against not having one.

The lesson here is to always ask to see any service documents before handing over any monies.

Great result. I'm sure you'll be checking all paperwork is present and correct before transferring any money in future.

Don't forget you'll still need to negotiate hard to get the best deal for your purchase.

The service history might just be recorded electronically in Land Rover's systems, which might explain why there's no physical record.

I went looking in the service book for my car for spaces for dealer stamps and found none, was surprised, read the book more carefully, saw that the record is only held by the manufacturer's systems as a way of reducing loss of paperwork and reducing fraud. (and I suppose forcing/persuading owners to use the manufacturer's agents). Not a Land Rover but a much less premium brand.

No physical record?

Not even invoices and receipts?........unlikely.

If you have a pre-paid service deal you wouldn't expect to see an invoice.

In the case of a company or fleet car, any invoice will go to, and be held by, the finance department.

If you have a pre-paid service deal you wouldn't expect to see an invoice.

You do see an invoice, but on the bottom line it says £00.00 and the words....."Costs met by service contract".......or something similar.

Not the case with Mitsubishi - no paperwork other than a stamped book under their service plan.

That's been the same with both dealers I've used.
