Toyota Prius - toyota prius - brake actuator fault - eustace

HJ's Car by Car review mentions:-

"Brake actuator fault on 5 year old Prius cost £2,757 for Toyota dealer to repair. Fault code C1214. Reader recommended to send to www.ecutesting.com for repair by=ut chose to use the Toyota dealer instead."

There seems to have been a warranty extension in the United States on the Camry hybrid, to cover brake actuator failures. See link below:-

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/07/why-toyota-should-recall-the-camry-hybrid/index.htm

On reading up on this on the web, I see that there are several articles about having to replace the brake actuators on the Prius.

HJ also mentions this as a common fault on the Lexus GS 300 (1998 - 2005)

"23-1-2012: Combined brake master cylinder and ABS/ESP module prone to failure after 10 - 12 years and costs £3,000 from Lexus UK or £1,800 sourced from Japan, effectively making the car an economic write-off."

I was looking for information on how widespread this problem is, particulalrly in the U.K. I am wondering whether to rule out a Toyota Auris HSD, due to this, which was a car on my shortlist for my next car purchase.

Has any one on this forum experienced or come accross issues of brake actuator failures in any of these Toyota models?

Any thoughts / inputs welcome...

I don't know about the Toyota/Lexus models, but I too was also concerned when recently considering a Suzuki Splash, for which HJ sates that it is essential to replace the whole of the brake fluid every 2 years to minimise the risk of an expensive problem with its ABS/ESP module. Again, Ecutesting.com or s******* can refurbish your existing unit for a fraction of the cost of a replacement one.

I seem to remember looking at Ecutesting or s*******'s websites and noting that more or less the same issue/repair was listed for many different vehicles - not surprising, if the same or similar module might be used by many manufacturers.

So rather than you being concerned about it being a weakness peculiar to Toyota/Lexus, it may be more down to how much the dealers for a particular marque wish to charge you for the module and carrying out the job.
Having said that, things may be a bit more complicated on the hybrids because of the initial regenerative-braking arrangement.

Even if you're going to use s******* say, who's going to remove and refit the module, where will the car be while it's undriveable, and what do you do for transport while the unit's away being repaired? Would probably need to find a good independent garage/specialist not too distant.

Overall, it seems to me that nowadays it sounds like it could be a good idea to replace the whole brake fluid every year on ANY car.

Thanks Handcart. Appreciate your inputs.

But given that Toyota has extended the warranty on this component (in the U.S.) to 10 years / 150,000 miles, it indicate that there may be something intrinsically wrong with it.

Reminds me of the oil consumption issues the early Toyota vvti engines had.

Wonder whether Toyota will offer the extended warranty in the U.K. as well.

I have a Toyota Prius 2009 t spirit and my brake actuator has failed too.

My car was rear ended by another car 1 1/2 month ago 2 days after car service by Toyota dealer. My rear bumper was replaced by the insurance approved garage team. 2 days later, there was a strange smell and on reaching the garage, ABS lights flashed. It was taken to the same Toyota dealer (where the car was serviced 2 days prior to the accident when no fault was evident) who now diagnosed brake actuator malfunction costing nearly £3500. The insurance team have rejected this as not related to the claim unless Toyota gives in writing stating that the fault as due to the accident. Toyota team are not committing to the accident as a cause as they are not sure. Now the onus has fallen on me to repair the brake actuator. Toyota has rejected to replace brake actuator free of charge . I am planning to involve ombudsman but not sure what else to do.

Checked on th Prius forum on ToyotaOwnersClub site, and this was the only mention - from 2013 - seems to confirm the high price:

Someboy mentions that "goodwill" will only be considered if there's a full dealer service history

I have full Toyota dealer service history

Apologies for the late response to this thread.

The first thing you need to focus on is to determine what work exactly did the insurance approved garage carry out. If they did anything related to the brakes that should raise red flags.

I understand that even a simple brake fluid change, if not carried out expertly by some one who is not trained in hybrid systems, can cause serious problems to the hybrid car.

Secondly Toyota in the U.S. has extended the warranty of the brake actuator to 10 years or 150,000 miles, for Prius upto Model Year 2011.
Quote this to the Toyota dealer and see if you can get some goodwill, particularly since the car has been serviced by Toyota.

Thridly ask the Toyota delaer, whether the accident could have caused the problem to the actuator.
The actuator is an electro-mechanical component, and even an indirect force could conceivably cause damage to this.
The Toyota delaer may be able to support you with this, even if they can't offer much by way of goodwill. See if they will give you a written report to this effect.

Let us know how you get on.

I checked with the garage who said they have not carried out anything related to brakes or brake fluid.
I checked with Toyota head office regarding the USA extended warranty program for brake actuator. Since the Toyota UK has not received any such recall in the U.K., they cannot help me.

The Toyota dealer service engineer admits that 'from his heart ', he believes the brake actuator problem to be related to the accident but cannot confirm it in writing.

The insurance engineer has rejected that the accident was not related to the brake actuator problem.
But thanks anyway for all your suggestions

That's tough.

HJ had previously recommended to a person with a similar problem, to approach the company called ecu testing

Below is the link to their website.

http://www.ecutesting.com/

They are able to repair complex components such as ECUs and ESP modules, at a fraction of the price of buying new.

Also try to reach out to any scrap yards / car breakers to see if you can get the part from a scrapped car. There may be a few available, as the prius is now a popular car, particulalrly with taxi drivers.

Also, there seem to be several on sale on ebay, at reasonable prices.

Check if the part number / model is the same, and see if you can buy it and get it fitted either at the toyota dealer, or a independant hybrid specialist.

Thanks a lot for all your support and suggestions. As I had needed the car badly, I had to repair the car with the dealer as the car was not safe to drive from insurance point of view. I have since sought Ombudsman help just to try my luck. Thanks once again.

Prasanth, how much did you end up paying to the Toyota delaer?

The £3500 they originally asked for, or was there any reduction?

Also, is your car a 1500 CC Prius or the 1800 CC one?

I have worked at the sharp end of a Toyota Franchised garage for 30 years, I've never ever had a fault with the brake actuator on any Hybrid.

I have worked at the sharp end of a Toyota Franchised garage for 30 years, I've never ever had a fault with the brake actuator on any Hybrid.

That's reassuring.

Hope you don't mind but i have to nip in here and ask a question whilst a Toyota (presumably?) tech or service manager is in the backroom, apologies for pinching the thread for a mo.

Yokel38, i have a 2005 auto Landcruiser LC5, with the combined master cyl abs unit and booster pump.

I know these things are reliable enough and i look after my vehicles above and beyond, i've seen how much these new brake parts are...sometimes wonder if i should have kept me Collie which had simple brakes but there you go...do you have any advice for me to help this seriously expensive combination last as long as possible.

Secondly if the pump or abs unit was to fail, are either them repairable at one of the better ECU testing companies out there, i haven't seen a hybrid brake actuator so don't know if we're talking similar equipment, similar prices yes.

Would be much obliged for any suggestions, and anything else that springs to mind i should keep a beady eye on re the car (i know about the injector washers and inspect the pick up when i change the oil, frequently.

thankyou
