Sorry Skidpan, I know you had no problems with yours,

I'm just trying to get it clear WHICH models of the engine are considered dodgy:

I know the 8 valve 2.0 HDi actually has a pretty good reputation,
but the 16v 2.0 less so,

but is it really the 1.6 HDi that's the troublesome one, and again is it particularly the 16v one, or is the 8v version just as bad?

(I think I'm right in thinking there was an 8v 1.6 (?) )

I think HDI is a Peugeot / Citroen engine, but could you clarify this?

Yes.

But I believe, in 1.6 size at least, the identical engine was used in the Ford C-Max, for example.

Yes, the 1.6 110bhp diesel in Peugeot is considered pretty poor.

I don't think its the engine per-sé, but the 20,000 mile oil change interval (the turbo oil feed usually blocks), incorrect low ash oil used, combined with a failure to keep the DPF system bolted onto it in good order.

Its been a while now but I'm sure when I looked into it, the same engine fitted to three different cars had three diffent manufacturer recommended oil change intervals - one was 20k, one 16k and one 13k.

Among global manufacturers, it's not uncommon for European cars to require high spec oil changed at 20k but identical engines in North America require low spec oil changed every 6k.

Oil change intervals are determined by marketing, not engineering - stupid isn't it.

Ours was the 1.6 TDCi 110PS fitted to the C-Max. It was Euro 3 thus had no DPF, in fact it was registed within 1 month of Euro 4 becoming law which was why we got a stunning deal on it. The service interval was 12500 miles or 12 months and as far as I know that is still the service interval in a Ford. It was always serviced using the correct Ford spec oil. We had it almost 5 years and sold it in September 2010. That chap that bought it still owns it and uses it on a daily basis. For the record he is a mechanic and we all know how well mechanics tend to look after their own vehicles. He will run it until it dies like he does with all his cars.

Chap next door but one has the same engine in a Mazda 3. Only does about 3000 miles a year and his does have a DPF but has had no issues so far.

We have a fleet of Peugeot vans fitted with the smae engine. They do a high annual mileage with 20,000 mile service intervals. No problems.

The simple fact is so many of these engines have been fitted to various makes of car its inevitable there will be issues. If some of the other types of engine out there were fitted in such vast numbers they would probably suffering similar failure rates.

With correct maintenance the engine is perfectly OK (but a bit slow).

Having said all that much preferred the Kia 1.6 CRDi 115 PS we had in the Ceed.

We've got the 1.6/115 HDi in a 2013/63 Berlingo. Doing close on 20k milespa of mixed urban and longer distance stuff including towing a small caravan. Service interval 12.5k miles or 12 months. Given distances covered we're servicing on mileage and it's usually done 500 or so early.

Never missed a beat. Never directly aware of DPF operation but apparently it accounts for odd operation and run in of radiator fan when you'd not expect it.
