Mazda 5 - Driving written off car - spytek

Hi Everyone

My 07 reg Mazda 5 was hit whilst it was parked and there is some damage near the back driver side corner (cosmetic - bumper and tailgate damaged- no protruding parts or damage to the lighting) but the car still drives without any issue. My insurance company have written off my vehicle as a CAT C saying it is uneconomical to repair.

They offered me £3600 intially but raised it to £3740 (excess to be deducted) after haggling but wont go any higher claiming that this is the maximum they will get from the 3rd party insurers. They have also offered me the chance to keep the vehicle but they will deduct ~£460 from the settlement amount. I feel that my car is worth £4000 as it is in excellent condition and is low milliage but they wont budge any higher. Would I be able to claim the difference (£260) back through the solicitiors? Can I also claim for any potential rise in my renewal price even though I dont know how much it will be until the time?

I'm planning to keep the car and get it repaired myself but I am not sure if I am allowed to drive it. My insurance company are saying that they will keep the policy in place providing I do repair the vehicle within the next few weeks but I will need to send them an MOT certificate after it has been repaired. Does this mean that my current MOT certificate is invalid?

Also since VIC inspection have been abolished, will people know that my car has been previously written off if they did a HPI check? Is there anything else I should be aware of in relation to owning a car that has been written off?

Thanks in advance.

Rob

It sounds like if you buy it back and repair it, you could be in profit.

The only downside is if you try to sell it you'll probably get a fraction of what it's worth due to the cat C marker on the V5c.

Personally, If the car was in good condition I'd buy it back and repair it but, Then I usually keep my cars for at least 2 decades.

AFAIR the MOT will have been invalidated (you can check the system at mot-history.net/ (but it seems to be down just now).

HPI will still show it as a CAT C or D - the VIC marker was on the V5.

edit: mot address seems to now be www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ must have come out of Beta testing ??
