This morning, went into the town centre early to collect something from a shop and had to park in the multistory as the high street closed for the day for an event.

Ok with that, but the council car parks have now gone over to pay and display, so some one parking has to take a guess on the maximum time they will be, instead of paying only for the time used, even if it is in hourly increments.

Paid for one hour and pressed button for ticket, got ticket for half hour as the final 10 p for the cost of £2.10 did not register, so had to pay again. no sir, no refund possible said the friendly traffic person who just happened to be passing to "check the cars"

So, got my purchase and then later drove off 15 miles ti Ipswich to do the rest of the shopping we wanted, and surprise surprise, where colchester charge £2.10 an hour on saturdays, Ipswich is a quid an hour.

As we live close to the new junction on the A12 by the park and ride, it is easier to go east tio Ipswich than to try to get down to pass the bottleneck of the bridge at Colchster railway centre.

A coomon complaint from our new neighbours today seems to be that Colchester do not want shoppers in the town and actively discourage car use by these means.

I find it daft as when I can take the bus for "ordinary shopping" it is indeed colchest who pay for my transport via the oap bus pass.

We've given up on town centres, intent on commercial suicide as they are, they can just get on with it and go broke.

The motorist, one with money to spend is not wanted, thats fine, the human being with a bladder is not wanted, that too is fine.

Now we sit in comfort, with a nice clean free toilet 8 steps away, click a few buttons, and the following day or couple at the most our goods arrive.

About the only thing we use the town for now is for food shopping which we prefer to do ourselves, course thats free parking.

We are the same,Bromley has become a difficult place to get to during weekends, parking expensive, if you can get near a space, our local town Orpington is now more restaraunts and cafes than any shops as it used to be

Although they are building a new Cinema there but its still a pain to park so I wont be bothering

And yet they keep saying these shopping malls are public friendly, I dont think so

ORB why don't you try the park n ride? Your right near it. BTW Have you tried the car park near Sheepen Road?

I'm lucky my office car park is right next door and I have my reserved free space there.

Isn't traffic round North Station Hill awful! If I lived there I'd go back to a scooter. Free parking and no traffic jams.

The park and ride means driving to yhe park and ride and paying. if i use my bus pass from just outside my door, it's free.

What tickles me is that when I want something larger that needs to go in th car I still have to pay extra to get it, so I'll do as GB says click and delivery.

When i told the shop they said they would have delivered free to get the deal anyways..aargh.

Yes Ethan, traffic can be vile around north station hill, and the slightest thing can cause gridlock.

Personally I hate going into the town centre for shopping, thesedays I buy most stuff online while sitting indoors, in the warm and drinking coffee while comparing prices between retailers. If I do have to go shopping, I'll go to one of the out of town retail parks where parking is free.

It is no coincidence that during refurbishment when the parking ticket machines were suspended and parking was free, that footfall and hence general business increased dramatically in a small Welsh town recently.

Local businesses reported a significant increase in business. Surely that should tell us all we need to know about how short sighted the money grubbing councils are. They don't give a flying f*** about local business as long as they can turn a few bob on parking.

Along with other great lies such as 'your cheque is in the post' etc etc comes the 'hello, I am here from the council to help you'. Yeah right!
