VW Golf GTI - Cam adjuster failure - RevDode

My Golf gti mk 6, 09 registration with 51k, developed a cam fault 3 weeks ago. On investifation, according to the VW garage this isn't the well-documented timing chain tensioner problem that TSI engines are prone to; instead the cam adjuster failed, causing the timing chain to stretch with resulting damage to chain tensioner, cylinder head and vsrious other associated parts. Cost to fix: £4600. VW originally offered 14% towards the cost (10% Customer Care + 4% local garage), since increased to 50% when i told them that wasn't anywhere near satisfactory.

Is this essentially the common timing belt tensioner fault? If not, what might have caused it?

If VW are claiming this is NOT due to the timing chain problem, then I'd ask them to put the same in writing. Make it very clear to them that you will appointing an independent engineer to investigate the eaxct situation. THey may just change their tune and offer to pay more.

That's one approach ...

The other is to accept the 50% contribution. The car is 6 years old, after all, and it is now going to be marginal as to whether their is any legal (rather than moral) liability to you.

I think you will find it is the other way round. The tensioner has failed, run out of adjustment, because the chain has stretched.Pretty much standard issue on these and other similar models in the Vag range.

Moral of this story. Don't own a modern car. Lease hire one instead. Look at running a car as an expense, which is what it is, and save yourself the hassle of digging deep for repairs.

If you bought it new from a VW dealer, check that it is less than 6 years old-if it is threaten the original supplying dealer that you will take out an action in the county court to recover the cost of repair if they don't play ball.

The limit of civil liability for breach of contract is six years from date of the original sale invoice.

Cue loads of posters saying you can't do that.
