Chevrolet Impala - Hertz rental car in USA - Graham567

Just got back off holiday to New Orleans and wanted to share a few photos of the hire car that Hertz gave me at the airport.

It is a Chevvy Impala with a 3.6 litre V6 engine. It was nearly new with only 3000 miles on the clock. It had leather seats(all electric),a huge touch screen interface with bluetooth music streaming and was extremely quiet on the road.I was very impressed with this car and wished they sold it in the UK because i would buy one in a heart beat. The only downside was a computer mpg readout of 16 mpg round town!.But petrol was only £1.50 a gallon and it only cost £30 to fill the tank!

Anyway here are the pictures i took.

Notice that they don't have number plates on the front of their cars which make the front look much cleaner.

That looks like Mondeo-size, which I think is the norm in the USA now (at least for those who don't have SUVs) - at long last after all those years of huge gas-guzzlers.

The 3.6 V6 sounds lovely: I suppose they wouldn't sell well in Europe given the price of petrol. But you'd think that GM could make economies of scale and do what Ford have done with the Mondeo / Fusion: bring the Impala over as a Vauxhall / Opel with some reasonably powerful 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engines.

Nice-looking car ... how much was the rental, out of curiosity?

I'd rather someone imported the Dodge Charger or Challenger Hellcat SRT, as I quite fancy a 707bhp car. Now where's my nearest Chrysler dealer? :)

For 2 weeks rental inc all taxes it was £350.The Impala i drove had 305 bhp which made it quick on the freeways. You can drive at 70 on the freeways in Louisiana but its 25mph round town.

That's not bad at all. And 305bhp is quite a lot of power by any standards!

Looks good, seems like there's a bit of German influence in the exterior design. Kind of A5 meets CLS meets latest Mondeo.

The interior is another matter though, very low rent fascia and dials.

Reminds me when of we holidayed in New England in 2000. Went for a 'mid-size' expecting an Impala or Taurus and was handed the keys to a Hyundai Sonata (albeit a 2.7 V6). Hugely disappointed! We never left the car park though as the glovebox was full of used tissues and dried pasta.

On complaining, we got a Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8. Loved it at the time, although 21MPG average driven gently!

A few tips i have learned while driving in America.

1. Petrol nozzle is black and diesel nozzle is green.Exactly opposite to the UK.You have to prepay for your fuel as well which is fun when your trying to fill the tank to max and you don't know how much its going to take.

2. Stop signs mean STOP. Do not slow down, look both ways and then continue, like a give way sign. You have to come to a complete stop.If its a 4way stop then you go in the order you all arrived at the junction. If you happen to get to the junction at the same time you have to work it out between you as to who goes first.(The people in Louisiana are very usually very courteous!)

3. You can turn right on a red light(as long as its clear!)

4. You cannot overtake a school bus when they are loading or unloading(a flag like thing sticks out of the bus). This applies in both directions,so you have to stop on the other side of the road as well(unless there is a central reservation).

5.Most people drive in the middle lane on the freeway. At first i thought this was weird but their inside lane quite often just filters off to the right and if your not paying attention you will end up driving off the freeway.

6.Americans can undertake and overtake. This method works very well and i don't know why we cannot adopt it over here.

7.If it starts to rain and you have to put your wipers on then you have to put your headlights on as well.(This might be a law only in Louisiana i don't know).

Feel free to add other tips and apologies if most of you already know these but i had to learn the hard way.

I had the previous generation version last year in Florida.

A pig to look at and very wobbly handling but....that engine!

Once I floored it at a set of lights it became so addictive to repeat.

The right turn on red (left turn on red in the UK) is such a good idea I cannot understand why no-one else uses it. Traffic flows so much better.

I agree HB, although it would probably be safer to use a green left-pointing arrow, on all the time except for a pedestrian-crossing phase.
