Dangerous - Potholes - oldroverboy.

Just outside the hospital here, the road has subsided and a biker got caught out not speeding, but riding into the sun. Came off and lucky not to be hit by oncoming traffic. Swmbo and a nurse who was passing checked him and called an ambulance, the holes had been spray marked and that night were given a temp filling. Now the area is spreading and some one came to measure it. I Told the person that the biker was lucky and was not surprised to hear that the road would have to be closed to fix it. Weeks later nothing happening. Does it need a fatality to be fixed.

The recent frosts and snow have left some very badly broken road surfaces round my neck of the woods - as a fair-weather biker I've been mentally noting them as obstacles to avoid when I pull the bike from its winter slumber.

Why don't you report them? They can't be repaired unless the relevant authority know about them!

Dangerous - Potholes - Snakey

Reporting them sometimes works, depends on the authority. Here in Durham they tend to leave potholes.

I reported a stretch of broken surface and collapsed edging and I received a letter a little while later - informing me they were planning speed humps on that road.

Speed humps now duly installed, potholes and broken road still the same. Defies logic really.

If you report them on a site such as FixMyStreet, then they're visible to the whole world and any subsequent damage or injury caused by them becomes the liability of the relevant authority, if they're not fixed in a reasonable time.

It's very simple and I find it easier than going through the relevant authority.

Some local authorities love pedestrians and cyclists, hate motorists and delight in measures to make driving a misery: humps, cameras, bus-lanes, Pelican crossings within 50 yards of each other, pavements widened and central refuges to turn 4-lane A roads into one lane each way, with no hope of overtaking 'creepers'. These authorities look on potholes as a cheap way of punishing motorists for daring to not use bus or bike.

as a motorcyclist I know just how hazardous potholes can be. Riding in the dark or, as in this example, unsighted by glare, you sometimes just cant see them until it's too late. Hitting one at 30 will very likely have you off the bike, and then it's with the gods as to whether anything then ploughs over you. Hitting one at higher speeds and the risks of death or serious injury really increase.

I would encourage anyone who sees a dangerous pothole to always report it. Never asume someone else has or will, really someone's life could depend on it.

Now received a further email from essex highways

The assessment of the pothole you reported at TURNER ROAD, Myland (Reference 2388300) has now taken place and it will be fixed within 28 working days (subject to any severe weather conditions).

If our inspector has identified that this issue needs more urgent prioritisation it may be repaired sooner.

We will update you again when this issue has been resolved.

Around this part of Kent it is not only the potholes that are causing problems. The roadside egdes are becoming broken, loose and rutted too. This is caused by people effectivey 'widening' the road by using the verge to avoid potholes in the general surface. The result is that if you were to drive into these ruts at speed, probably in darkness, they could easily rip the tyre off and destroy the suspension. I have nearly been forced into the ruts to avoid large HGV's and even at low speed they are very dangerous, could destabilise a car and cause a crash. As you say, it will take a fatality to get action taken. What a pity when motorist contribute so much to the Treasury.

Got to hand it to the Highways Agency.

Tis they who are responsible for fixing the potholes on the A12.

Going home Monday night my 'iccle' Yaris hit a vast chasm. London bound Inside lane nr the Kelvedon turn off. I really thought the car/wheel would be damaged it was that bad. It's been there two weeks usually I avoid it but that time I was following someone and it was dark. So I hit it.

Turns out my cars ok but scary enough.

So I emailed them yesterday and also phoned and whined like a beyatch to the Birmingham call centre guy. Anyway going home last night it had been fixed.

So kudos HA. Now fix the others.....mwahahaha!
