If a customer buying a car decides to buy some add ons ie. Gap insurance paint protection etc etc does the dealer receive a commission from the company providing the goods or is it a simple case of the dealer inflating the price to keep part of it as profit.

I am just curious that if the dealer receives a bung from the company what is the position if a customer cancels during the cooling off period

Does the dealer lose its commission or as above has it already made its money by marking up the product.

"if the dealer receives a bung from the company"

Why bother asking the question if you phrase it like that? It's a business, they are there to make a profit. If nothing is sold, they don't make any. Eventually they go out of business. You are not forced to buy anything - make a considered choice as to whether you feel the product is suitable for you and reasonably priced. What the company makes ultimately out of it shouldn't worry you. Do you know how much Sky/Virgin/BT make out of a package? (as an example).

To directly answer re. cooling off period - monies will be clawed back so no they don't make money after a cancellation (the possible exception would be internal finance up to a certain amount).

Ok ok dont get your knickers in a twist!!! I think it patently obvious what your line of work is.

I guess most peoples gripe is the highly inflated prices some charge when the same product is available for much less with an adequate profit made.

Apologies anyway I should have used the word commission instead of bung. Very often means the same. Semantics and all that.

Bung and commision mean very different things.

I'm assuming you work for a company that sells items at cost price and makes no profit at all?

It's surely well known that retailers, whether selling motor cars or washing machines, make a bigger margin on insurance products than on the goods themselves.

Just say no and buy the policy directly from an insurer or repair company.

What's the problem?

When I bought my last car the dealer (as usual) offered me GAP insurance, paint treatment, upholstery treatment etc. As usual I turned them all down.

But GAP insurance appealed due to the cost of modern cars so I did an on line search. Instead of the 3 years cover for almost £400 the dealer offered (did reduce it to £350 when I said no) I got cover to the end of year 5 (first year deferred since my own insurance provided replacement in year 1) for £130. Cover exactly the same.

Presumably you chose to buy the add-ons because you thought the price was acceptable for what you were getting. Millions of people keep buying the latest Apple products at what are clearly inflated prices for the same reason. Do they accuse the sellers of taking a bung?

Its a pity no one is prepared to answer the specific question I posed but instead goes off at tangents taking umbrage at my use of a certain road.

There must be many politicians on this site who are dab hands at avoiding the specifics.

No problem I shall try elsewhere.

How does this answer your question.

It does not matter if the dealer receives commision or makes a profit from the sale. All that matters to the dealer is the simple fact he makes money on the deal. That is what they are in bussiness to do.

If I am offered a service or a product that I require and the price is agreeable to myself I don't give a monkeys if the seller gets commission or whatever.

In the specific circumstance of cancellation during cooling off period I'd imagine any gap or paintwork policies are cancelled too. No commission or bung.
