Hyundai i30 - Cut finger from door handle - Schooner

I have been very happy with my 5 year old i30 iwned from new, but recently the trim on the front passenger internal door handle has become razor sharp, resulting in 3 badly cut fingers for adult members of my family. Goodness knows what would happen with children's fingers.

Having Googled the problem it seems to be well known. After the last cut finger I contacted Hyundai UK who refused any type of goodwill payment, as the car is 3 months beyond its warranty period. Their suggestion was to pay the local dealer £87.42 each tio replace the handles.

My i30 now sports some pieces of natty black insulating tape to cover the offending handles.

Needless to say, I am unimpressed, but wanted to warn others.

Does the compensation culture know no bounds ?

You mention that one door handle has become razor sharp - so just replace that one, either with a new part or a part from a breakers.

Clearly an open and shut case

Old car had worn handle that has become sharp? Just get a new one...things wear - replace it.

It might be worth buying a file and filing the sharp edge away.

Absolutely. I should think an emery-board for nails would do the trick. Does no-one try simple DiY any more? Ridiculous.

No, they prefer to moan tha a company won't replace it

have some sellotape wrapped over mine been there a couple of years . no prob

Agreed it not durable but then again the cost of repair is far less than any legal action, so best to suck it up as they say

I think it perfectly reasonable for Schooner to expect something from Hyundai. However, they didn't respond in this was and he has taken DIY action.

His post is simply to publicise his experience of Hyundai's attitude.

If people aren't interested - fine.

I know that as a result of reading some posts complaining about a certain dealer I will never risk going there.

Thanks Schooner.

At 3 months over the 5 years, trim items are more than 4 years out of warranty as that's only covered for the 1st year.

Hyundai replaced my I10 drivers seat cover after 4.5 years when it was worn through on the side squab. trim ?

I'm the opposite - I'd not expect any car company to do anything.

What would you think they should do?

Hyundai i30 - Cut finger from door handle - scot22

I said it was reasonable to expect something : that's not to say I thought they would, just that it is reasonable that they would think it would be good PR to do a bit extra.

We are not taking about a large sum of money. I'm sure we can all quote much older cars that have not had this. I've had Volvo fitting much expensive things out of warranty.

It would cost them very little to replace the handles which should last longe,r or at least provide the replacements. The cost of this would probably be far outweighed by the goodwill generated. If it were my Company it is what I would have authorised.

Incidentally OP did not mention any compensation, so why the mention in earlier post of compensation culture ?

I would think it more reasonable to expect Hyundai to have made handles from a more durable material which does not create hard edges. However when they clearly haven't, I would expect nothing more than curing the problem myself. If I had a bit of cash to spare I might try Ebay.

Some Chinese enterpreneur may at this very moment be taking a mould of a Hyundai interior door handle and will soon be flogging them on the bay of e, either be super brittle plastic or monkey metal.

Actually that Hyundai is doing quite well, my brand new quality German lorry interior started to dismantle itself after the first week, including door locks interior trim and grab handles coming loose as various screws and bolts were not tightened properly, and since then i have to regularly retighten things...known in driver circles for a somewhat fragile build (were built like a Panzer 25 years ago)... i hope the inspecting fitters know what's likely to be similarly not done up underneath.

The Germans lost more Panzers (specifically Panther and Tiger tanks) to mechanical breakdowns than enemy action..

Our fleet of lorries is all Mercedes and I have to say the 19 year old ones we recently got rid of felt better put together than the brand new ones we have just got. But that could be because it is a brand new model still in its first year of production.

Its all about profit.

Houses have gone the same way.

The simile should be "built like a T34"

As usual, GB, you have hit the nail on the head.

If you visit the Bovingdon Tank Museum, last time I was there a T34 was on display next to a Tiger. The T34 was roughly finished but I could well believe took one tenth of the time and cost to build and maintain.

(Bovingdon is only 40 miles from the Haynes Motor Museum, worth a visit!)

Nothing wrong with the handles on my 5 year old i30, by the way, they appear to be substantial die castings with a highly polished chromed finish. Can't think how sharp edges would develop with normal use?

Hyundai i30 - Cut finger from door handle - madf

The cheap and lasting answer to sharp edges on an interior handle is a file and gaffer tape. Last the lifteime of the car.

Regarding tanks and modern lorries, the same is also true of central heating boilers. Modern ones appear to have a design life of 8 years. Ours is now 32years old and functioning perfectly. MInd you, the house it's in is 190.:-)
