Chrysler Grand Voyager - Wife stopped by police after buying 2nd hand car - markyb7

Hi, Just a query as don't know who else to ask !!

Bought a car on Sunday from a dealer with no service history other than two MOTs, one current and one from two years previous. V5 was present and didnt really notice the two year MOT gap. Have since searched for and found previous MOTs (apart from the gap) and all mileage seems reasonable.

Did an AA HPI before purchasing and all VIN and Chassis numbers matched up. Dealer completed V5 and am waiting for new one to arrive.

Query is that my wife was stopped the other day by the police as the DVLA believe that this car is SORN !!!

How come this is not something that the HPI check, checks for ?

Fortunately I remembered the previous keepers name (dealer had not transferred into his own name... apparently common) and was able to satisfy the policeman over the phone that we had just purchased it. Obviously we had taxed it and insurance sorted but now my wife is convinced that something is wrong. Not helped that the NMR has thrown up a discrepancy, albeit ony 360 miles !!!

It genuinely sounds like someone has SORNd it and said 59k when it was actually 58640... am confident by the progression of the previous MOTs.

Bit of a question mark as to where its been for two years though.

Anyone had a similar experience..... have tried googling HPI/SORN but havent found anything similar.

Thanks

Mark

Any VED on the car lapsed and refunded as soon as the seller sent the V5C to DVLA - as a new owner your wife should have taxed it before driving it.

The rules changed in October.

"as a new owner your wife should have taxed it before driving it"

We did. Taxed online before we drove off the forecourt Sunday and email confirmation received from DVLA. Wife stopped whilst out driving on Thursday and policeman said their records showed it as SORN ?

Main query, sorry if didnt make clear is why do HPI checks not check for SORN and does it really matter.... ?

Is it possible to check for historical SORN information.

Wife panicking that we have bought a car that there is something wrong with!

I wasnt really bothered about service history as was immaculate inside and out and drives really REALLY well.

If you do a vehicle check on the DVLA website, right at the top of the entry it says:

New keepers must get tax before using the vehicle. Please be aware that if you have taxed, made a SORN or had an MOT in the last 5 days these details may not have updated.

I think you're worrying about nothing! HPI checks don't check the taxation status of a vehicle, by the way.

As above

Isnt SORN cancelled automatically when valid MOT and Tax exists?

I would have thought that the SORN would have been over-ridden once the new tax was bought. Sounds like a glitch in the system to me.

SORN is over-ridden if car is taxed, or changes hands. MOT status as far as I know is irrelevant (you can take a SORNed car to and from a pre-booked MOT). Police data system does have lag, but I thought it was only hours, not days.

Only if it's covered by insurance.

That was dropped from my previous post.
