On the emissions part of the mot I know they have to rev the car to maximum governed speed a few times for the smoke test I was curious to see on my car how much smoke was present when this was done.

But my car will only rev to 2500 rpm in neutral. How would this apply to the mot? Can the tester over ride this setting?

Rolling road?

The diesel emission test is an optical smoke test. The mot tester cannot override any rev limiter built into the cars fuel management system.

I'm sure a probe is inserted in to exhaust as I've had diesel cars before but none that wouldn't rev up to the red line in neutral. But I could be wrong about the probe.

Yes,an optical probe is inserted into the exhaust tailpipe. It does not measure emissions similar to a petrol engine test. The only way an engine will rev to the red line ,when fitted with a limiter,is if the car is under load or in gear if an auto ,with the wheels rotating. This is not going to happen on an mot test.

The test is carried out with an engine speed of 2500 rpm, or half the maximum engine speed if this is lower.

In gear and press the clutch?

It's a automatic.

I thought it was to the limiter, for a maximum of three attempts?

My local friendly garage does not like to redline the engine under no load, however, so I always take it to them for the MoT. ;)
