ford focus 2002 - rear windscreen wiper - auldyin1

For some time my rear windscreen wiper worked with the wiper stopping from time to time then restarting but now it has stopped working altogether. When I turn it on there is a hum but the wiper does not move.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is likely to be?

Perhaps the wiper arm has become loose on the motor shaft.?Can you move the arm freely by hand?If you can, then the securing nut needs tightening.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

The wiper arm can be moved fairly freely by hand. (I checked a newish Kia which a neighbour had and the rear wiper arm would hardly move at all when I tried to move it by hand.)

I tried tightening the nut but the nut was already quite tight. I then loosened the nut and retightened it but it made no difference.

There is still just a bit of a hum when I turn on the rear windscreen wiper but the wiper does not move.

A hum with no movement suggests that the motor is faulty. Not a difficult job to replace, but you will need to remove the interior tailgate door card for access.

I've just got round to trying to sort out the problem after the holidays. I'm not a handyman and I asked a local garage (East Midlands) - usually honest with reasonable prices - what it would cost to get the wiper working. They confirmed it needed a new motor but wanted £318 which seems an awful lot.

Any views on what it should it cost for a garage to supply and fit a new motor?

Looks like a garage has already quoted for a new motor.?Get one from a breakers or glee -bay.There are thousands of s/hand focus motors available.Labour charge from a garage should be approx 1 hour or less.

Thanks for the advice.

Got wiper motor from local car breakers (£15) and fitted for £25 plus vat ie £30.

Working fine!
