Cheap 4x4 for the winter - euro driver

I'm looking for a cheap as possible (< 1000) 4x4 to use over the winter.

I'ts not for a daily driver but only for the weekend where I need to get up and down a waterlogged muddy dirt track only a few miles away.

A Landie would be ideal but they seem to have a huge markup - even for ancient ones.

What would everyone suggest?

Tyres are everything. Proper mud n snow tyres. Then Rav4, Xtrail Forrester etc.

Agreed. Tyres are the most important thing.

Suzuki Jimny, perhaps ?

4x4 prices, both proper off-roaders and soft-roaders, don't behave like normal used car prices which drop consistently - 4x4 prices hold in the autumn, rise in the winter, and then lose their year's depreciation quickly in the summer.

So buying a 4x4 now, with good tyres for under £1000, isn't easy as you're probably looking for a car where the tyres are worth as much, or more, than the rest of the car.

Good luck.

We have seen 4x4s on summer tyres upturned in streams here..And 2wd cars with winter tyres proceeding merrily..

It's hard to suggest anything unless we know what the track is like. Is it just muddy but made of something firm like hard core, or is it thick mud and ruts or rocky?

You might be able to get away with a small car with cleated winter tyres. Only front wheel drive but you rarely see small hatchbacks getting stuck - there's no weight to lug around and the engine sits over the drive wheels. Very cheap to buy and run.

Otherwise, the usual suggestions as above or something like a Mk1 Octavia 4x4 would be within budget.

With the usual caveats about tyres being the most important thing.

Nissan Terrano/f*** Maverick?

Toyota Hilux Surf?

Mk2 Mitsubishi Shogun?

Vauxhall Frontera?

How strange. The site seems not to like Ford, the maker of the mondeo, etc

That looks a cracker for its miles Trilogy.

Is that extra lever i see sticking out near the handbrake a low range selector? ISTR at least some Foresters having low range.

Much nicer drive than hardcore 4x4's when not doing the business, certainly in this budget where a £grander is likely to be a bit er agricultural.

Yes GB. All manual Foresters had a low range lever. The autos did not.

All manual non turbos.

Thanks HB and Corax, cleared that up nicely.

DAihatsu Fourtrak,,,,but leave it in 2wd unless 4wd is absolutely essential to regain forward progress....go back to 2wd as soon as the ground regains any sort of firmness or grip....really saves wear & tear on the tranny!

Old-school, best diesel engine for the job....on road, 30+ MPG, but will run on pretty much anything if needs be [accidentlaly put 20-odd litres of U/L petrol in mine last spring...never missed a beat!]

Warmer than a L/rover, more human bodyspace than a Defender [etc]...will tow a town the size of Oldham..[genuine, factory-specified, 3.5 tonne towing limit]...should never be washed, except just before the MoT....will always start if one waits for the first or second click, from under the bonnet...on the first turn of the starter.

Bodyshell rot now picked up [due to seatbelt mounts]...even though it has a chassis....which is a shame, really.

Headlights not very good, so maybe an idea to fit a bull bar...just in case?

Cupholder too [unlike defender?]......and no-one cares if you're in front, only doing 50mph! [it's about expectations?]...but the turbo diesel [proper one, no electronics needed].....will suddenly push you up to 60 or 70 in an instant....which followers may find annoying?

Agressive tyres might be useful for the actual ground one needs the vehicle for....but getting there, and back, on tarmac roads with such tyres needs a good deal more care than some are prepared to give...so I suggest imposing yor own, lower, speed limts?
