Hyundai i10 - Haggling on an approved used car - Rooby

In the (hopefully) not too distant future I'm going to be purchasing my first car. I've got a budget of £5k (paying cash) and quite like the look of the Hyundai i10 1.2. My local approved dealer has a few in advertised around £5500. How realistic is it to get the price down under £5k?

Also is buying approved used worth it? I like the idea of the extra security and peace of mind, but is it all it's cracked up to be?

Go in and haggle hard. Many low mileage approved used Hyundais will be ex hire cars. If this bothers you ask them directly who the previous keeper was.

As long as it's been serviced properly AND it's not a hire car, the warranty is transferable - 5 years unlimited mileage.

Our Hyundai was ex hire, the 5 year warranty was transferred.

Not true - mine was an ex hire car but has the warranty and breakdown cover transfered.

davey/alan - did you had many problems with your ex-hires? How was the Hyundai warranty? I know some warranties are filled with so much small print it's practically impossible to claim - is the Hyundai one like this?

The Hyundai warranty has the wear-tear exclusions all listed, together with the mileages above which claims aren't accepted for that item - it's not a huge list and there's nothing unreasonable in the mileages - eg, dampers are only warranted up to 60,000 miles.

Many car warranties simply exclude wear-tear without any definition of parts included or the limits applied to each part.

I;ve had mine since Janauary - bout it with 6,500 miles on it and now have done 18,500 and in that time not had a problem with it. Excellent car.

As for the warranty Hyundai seem pretty fair in the list of exclusions on their webiste. As long as you get it serviced to schedule then youare covered for most big expenses.

I had a tear in the drivers seat back - caused I think by collapsed foam inside. Four and a half years old and the fixed it under warranty. Two days sending it to an upholsterer with new foam and cover. I think they're fair when it comes to warranty claims.

Many years ago I bought a used approved Micra from a Nissan garage. It was 5 years old and died at 9 years old. I thought it was quite an expensive way to buy a car, and after a few years it became expensive to maintain. I looked at cars in non Nissan garages, and they looked iffy. If I was to buy used again, it would be a private sale, and a younger car, with a proper test drive and an online history check. Do you have someone who knows cars well who is willing to help you? Sites such as Trade Sales of Slough used to have cars in your price range, but they wouldn't let me test drive a car.

We purchased a 7 month old, 6k miles Hyundai i10 from Trade Sales and were allowed to test drive it. Be ready, they're good at qualifying how interested you are! £3.5k off list, ex Thrifty hire car, just had it main dealer serviced and it had all 4 spark plugs replaced under a service note. no mention of previous owners. Terrific little car.

Mine was an ex-Thrifty car as well!
