Mazda 3 MPS - winter wheels - sg1974

I have purchased a 2010 Mazda 3 MPS, i was thinking of buying a second hand set of wheels so i can put winter tyres on. Can anyone advise what wheels will fit my car. I have 18" alloys with 225/40-18 tyres on just now which is standard size. I see on ebay there is plenty 17" wheels for sale but i dont want to buy in case they dont fit. Any help greatly appreciated

Look at wheel and tyre packages on mytyres. The last set I bought from them were for a Mazda MX5 - four tyres fitted would have been £240 or so, I got the same tyres fitted on some presentable looking alloys (Enzo W) for about £440 IIRC. It wasn't worth looking for a decent second hand set. whoch would have been no cheaper in all probability. They supply them with spigot rings if required.

Previously I have also bought a set of all season tyres on steel rims for winter use on my Outlander from them.

They arrive in about a week, from Germany.

Here's a link to compatible wheels: www.wheelfitment.eu/car/Mazda/3%20MPS%20%282009%20.../

I'd suggest you stick with standard wheel and tyre sizes. Check with your insurance before changing.

Isn't the Mazda 3 a Ford Focus in drag? Any wheel and tyre combination from the Focus should fit. 40-profile tyres on British roads? 'I've given my thoughts on that before! Appen you live dahn sartf where's there's more money for road repairs, but the holes and bumps up here would break your wheels - and your back. Ideally for winter in the Pennines, you need the smallest wheel and deepest tyre, but I've driven around many a four-wheel-drive BMW or Audi which manages quite well spinning its big, wide wheels and sliding around on the ice. I don't like to slide around like that, so I drive a little front-wheel drive jobbie and drive around them. Unlike me, you probably like your car to look nice (whereas I don't give a whatsit) so rather than go to the smallest wheel, which I believe is 15" on the Focus (look either in the handbook or for a small plate at the bottom of the passenger door pillar which has all the approved wheel and tyre combinations and the respective tyre pressures) why not get a set of 16" and a set of Vredestein Quattrac all-season tyres which are very good on snow and ice, and you'll find them so much more comfortable and drivable than the silly wide 40-profile that I'll bet you keep using them all year!

Don't forget this is a 260bhp car with bigger brakes than the lower powered jobs.

Unfortunately, dealers and manufacturers tend not to be very good at answering questions about this sort of thing. They might do a winter tyre/wheel package, at a price. bt's link looks very helpful.

The mytyres configurator thingy offers a minimum of 17" alloy wheels for the winter tyre packages for the MPS which might be some sort of guide. They do 48mm offset which in theory is close enough to your 50mm - but consider what steps you need to take to make sure you are insured! There are no steel wheels listed for the MPS.

When I bought steelies for the Outlander, I asked the dealer (no use) and emailed Mitsubishi UK for "sign off". I gave them the wheel size and offset, and the tyre size and ratings. They came back and said "that is the homologated tyre size" and that was as much as I could get out of them. On the phone the nearest I could get to confirmation on the offset was "if the wheels fit they will be OK". (they were 38mm, which bt's link shows is correct). They are 16", cf. the 18" alloys the car came with.
