Peugeot 306 - Advice please on Peugeot 306 MOT fail on emissions - mayfieldgirl

Hi, My 1999 306 has again failed on emissions and I'm just not sure if it's going to be financially worth getting it fixed when the garage has said there's no guarantee it would pass even after work.

Would someone be able to look at the read out and give me some advice please?

Fast Idle Test : RPM - 2200 - Pass / CO - 0.550 - Fail / HC - 82 - Pass

Lambda - 1.033 - Fail

Second Test : RPM - 2201 - Pass / CO - 0.519 - Fail / HC - 82 - Pass

Lambda - 1.03 - Fail

Natural Idle : RPM - 912 - Pass / CO - 0.495 - Pass

Garage have said may be the Cat.

Thanks so much.

I'd have to agree, it looks like the cat has failed/collapsed

As to whether it's worth doing it or not, only you can really make that call. If the car is otherwise reliable, then it's more likely to be worth getting a new cat fitted. But then there is the risk that something else might be causing the emission failure too, in which case you've wasted that money.

If the car has lots of other problems/unreliable, then it's far less likely to be worth spending money on it

Thanks for that.
There was a pretty long list of advisements so maybe time to call it a day. Ebay here I come!

Cheap CAT from Ebay or CATS2U should sort it.

If the cat is faulty a diagnostic check should pick that up.

Most cheap cats are not worth the money if you intend to keep the car-they'll get you thro' the MoT but that's about it.

Not necesarily. I put a £45 cat on my 1996 Peugeot 306 diesel from an Ebay motor trader based in Leeds. It lasted at least three years until I sold it.

A cat? On a 1996 306 diesel? Really?

It is possible as they had to be fitted in 1997.

Would it be worth trying cataclean?

You can usually get it from a local motor place.
www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-accessories/engine-...9

FWIW, I'd add it, run the car on the motorway for half an hour to an hour
then gett it tested while the engine's still hot.
.. I even revved mine outside the mot place to keep the cat hot, right until the MOT test.

(Local garages around here, will do an emissions test , outside the MOT , for £2-£3,
so you can have a go or two to decide)

My car, a peugeot 106 1.1 petrol 1997 went from very high readings
(they didn't give me the prinout but i could see it on the screen) to very low,
after adding cataclean, doing an italian tune (driving on the motorway in 4th gear),
keeping the engine hot outsid the mot place by revving it a bit ...nothing crazy
( I also changed the oil, oilfilter, & fixed a small exhaust hole)

I don't know what of the above actions fixed my emissions readings
.. but something did. !

What do you think of spending £15 on cataclean , in the hope it will fix it?

Good Luck
Liam
ps you can search for cataclean on the forum... mixed reviews.
I was desperate...but something i did worked...

pps , just a random link

I had a 1999 diesel 306 HDi for several years and I don't recall ever noticing a cat in the exhaust system?

I had an X-reg HDi 306 for some years and can assure you that OE included a cat. That was confirmed when I had to replace the whole exhaust system, which wasn't cheap.

There are endless posts on the internet on various owners' club boards about decatting the system.

What a load of rubbish has appeared on here.It started off as petrol vehicle but diesels have appeared which do not have an idle CO check-only smoke.

"What a load of rubbish has appeared on here.It started off as petrol vehicle but diesels have appeared..."

It's not "a load of rubbish" - it's "thread drift". It happens and may be irritating to some. Like any conversation, it may wander from its starting point. It's moot point about how much drift is too much.
