Citroen Xsara Picasso - Very odd noise ! - RIK HG

Hi,

I have just bought a 55 Citroen Xsara Picasso 2.0 Petrol. The car has a a strange noise coming from around the pullies. It sounds like an air leak (obviosly not!) but more like shhh...shhh...shhh...shhh as the pullies go round. Really cant narrow it down, possibly from pulley at the bottom if anybody can help ??

Could just be that the belts are worn, try squirting some water on them while running, if the noise stops its likely the belts.

I will give it a go thank you, could i use belt dressing instead of water ?

Cambelts can rub slightly on their plastic covers too, not necessarily anything to worry about but if it is that probably worth removing the cover for a poke nose.

For noises like this i've had to remove auxilliary drive belts before now and run the engine without for a short time to pinpoint such sounds.

Sounds like a good plan Gordon, I will have to remove covers to spray them so removing aux belts may be the next step, thank you.

A note about belt dressing RIK HG.

My old MB suffered for yonks with the worlds squeakiest drive belt, drove me up the wall...as Peter notes above, spraying with water shut it up till it dried out again.

My indy tried everything, new OE, pattern parts you name it, belt dressing only made it worse after a day or two, though thats not to say it won't help yours.

Eventually he heard somewhere to put a Continental brand belt on, did so...silent bliss resumed.

Ok Gordon thanks, I did just try a quick spray of water but no difference in the noise. I will jack the car up and approach from all angles ! I will leave the belt dressing as a last resort for later ! Many thanks for the tips ....

Well after much heartache I think i finally nailed it . I took your advice and had the belts changed. Whilst the belts were being done I had the water pump replaced as a precaution .... Noise gone !! Possibly could have got away with just the belts being done but took the plunge anyway. glad I did, either way, noise gone ... many thanks !!
