2014 Diahatsu Terrios - Rotten egg smell. is it the catalytic converter? - Bad Terrios

April 2014 I bought a brand new Terrios. She has less than 1000km on the clock. There is a rotten egg smell emiting from the exhaust. Does this indicate a faulty catalytic converter? The dealership says it is normal for all new cars to smell like that. I just don't buy that explanation.

It's just a smelly cat-been common for years. Smelly cat odor is usually noticed after a cold start, fast idle, extended periods of idling and full throttle acceleration. The sulphur smell is not an indication of an engine concern and will not cause reduced driveability or durability of the engine or any of its emission components.

Driving too gentley and gingerly can greatly extend how long the cat takes to "light up" causing the smell you describe. I'm not saying thrash it cold - just don't be afraid of revving it a bit to get some heat into the cat.

If I take the car on a long, hard drive should it sort this problem out? Or will this happen everytime the cat does not reach it max temp? Do all new cars smell like this?

Possibly the petrol you are using has a higher sulphur content than some other brands. As said above, driving very gently from cold may also contribute to your problem.

I took her on a long hard drive and changed petrol brand. This seems to have worked :-)

Mmmm, I thought the problem was solved! Since we last communicated I have had one coil in the pack replaced. Diagnostic test showed one bad coil. Less than 500km later the full coil pack has been replaced. Engine light flashing and car jerking very badly. Take into account that I have only had the Terrios for 3 months! Only 1700km on the clock.

Are all these things related? Smelly cat? Poor performance? High idling? Faulty coil pack?

I am truly at my wits end. Is in time to inssist on a replacemnet vehicle?

Could be a bad batch of coils...

Did they scan the on board computer for any fault codes?

They have replaced the coil packs twice.

The computer shows coil fault but nothing else. something must be causing the coils to pack up!
