SWIMBO has just been pulled over by someone who was parked (black BMW) in a laybe who stepped out in front of her (i.e into the lane) and pointed a speed gun at her. He then basically waved her to pull over by standing in front of the car.

He then told her she was speeding (34 in 30) but would 'let her go' and warned her the limit was now 30 rather than the 40 it used to. She then drove home but as soon as I heard this I was very concerned - he was in a black unmarked car, dressed in black trousers and black shirt with no ID, offered no ID or name and was on his own.

We're going to report this but if this is actually a copper then I'm disgusted with their methods of working - standing in the road is b***** stupid for starters, but pulling over a woman on her own when he has no identification at all is also extremely poor practice. I've told my wife to never pull over for a m**** like this, and if he pursues her to pull into a petrol station and explain why.

We've subsequently found out he was actually genuine, but that link shows he basically was doing everything wrong. My already low respect for the police has dropped even lower.

On the one hand I have had to get the car in front to pull over and stop before now by flashing at them. Not because I am a wanabe copper, or they were speeding, rather they were driving on a very flat tyre and they had not realised it. If they had kept on driving they would have either lost control in a corner or damaged their car even more. Sure I don’t have any powers to pull anyone over, but in reality I was doing nothing but warn them I was there as according to the highway code that’s all flashing headlights mean, considered it being a good citizen.

Actually its happened a few times. Once it was a lone female who had just picked up a hire car and she thought they were all that noisy!

So I am not entirely sure ignoring a warning to pull over is entirely good advice, although I would be telling them to be super careful. Its as least as likely it’s a genuine warning from someone like me as it is someone up to no good.

On the other hand I have seen coppers act really stupid in the way they go about their work, one particular idiot copper was standing on the line of the hard shoulder on the M4 pointing a radar gun at traffic coming towards him. That particular way of trying to enforce speed limits is just dangerous beyond belief. And so on.

When you hear the unmistakable roar of a car being driven on a flat tyre - the completely oblivious driver is invariably a woman. Opps, no, sorry - I forgot they are better drivers. Silly me. I make this observation because I ALWAYS look to see who's driving in such circumstances. In the rare cases it's not a woman, it's usually an elderly man.

So always a woman except when it's a man! LOL

Yes, especially the part are having someone in uniform present if you're pulling someone over. Anyone can buy a speed camera on ebay. This guy was obviously just bored/enjoying throwing his weight around etc.

Police uniforms in the UK are often black in colour and he would have had a ID card,he was pointing out it was 30mph not 40mph quite within his rights had he have been throwing his weight abiut he would have booked the culprit.

Thats the point, no ID and not a uniform by anyone's standards. No name or explanation given. You would expect a genuine plod to explain who he was and why he'd pulled over and produce ID - especially when you're dressed in Tesco black jeans and polo shirt! The car was also completely unmarked, and his action of standing in the road to point a camera was also very dubious behaviour for a genuine doughnut hogger.

He would have had ID if you had asked just think yourself lucky there is no fine to pay or points on the licence.Plenty of unmarked plain clothes police in all counties including the UK.If your daughter had not been breaking the law she would not have stopped I would think myself lucky and not be complaining about it.

Before jumping to the usual self righteous mantra at least read my post to get the facts right. It was my wife, and HE should have identified HIMSELF on pulling her over. Pulling people over for speeding(or not) is not the issue, would you be so blase if it was your wife/daughter and this had happened, perhaps on a nice dark winters night.

IMO you should make a complaint. I would have expected a hi-viz or some other means of being able to see that he was a Police Officer. Frankly, I'd have driven round him and continued on.

A couple of weeks ago I followed three Police bikers round the A46 Coventry bypass. They were clearly out to have some fun, doing a shade under 90 along the northern end, undertaking and then weaving in and out of the traffic on the approach to the Tollbar roadworks.

These sorts of things disgrace the uniform they wear. Is it any wonder people are losing respect for the Police. They should lead by example.

I'm pretty sure a complaint would be ignored.

I'm glad it was a genuine plod in a way, at least there isn't some weirdo impersonating plod out there!

If you don't make a compalint then nothing will ever change

I can understand not wanting to make a complaint because it probably would go unnoticed but Alan has a good point that if you don't complain there's definitely no chance of it changing. I think it's wrong that he didn't even identify himself. If that had happened to my wife I would be just as angry as you.

Based on my experiences of plod in the past a complaint would simply bring me to their attention - and all of their mates. So I would be a marked man as far as motoring goes!
