That comment is neither helpful nor true. The 2.0 TDI goes very well and also economically. Make sure you get the common-rail diesel engine, not the older (sometimes unreliable) PD. A 3-year-old model should have the new engine.
Go for one with a full VW service history, and ideally one that's done neither too many nor too few miles. Also check if the cambelt has been changed if the car has done over 40,000 miles. There's a lot of confusion over when VW cambelts should be changed, but as one of the versions says it's at 40,000, best to play safe.
