Ford Fiesta Saloon - refund on a brand new car! - bluenosebren

Hi everybody, 4 weeks ago my partner took delivery of a brand new 1.0 zetec ecoboost. A few days ago on a motorway with lorries behind it went into limp mode which shook her up really badly. Luckily nothing disastrous happened but her new job involves lots of driving and she specifically wants a car that won't let her down.Following tests Ford are shipping in a brand new engine from Germany to be fitted this week which at face value seems like good efficient service but now we're beginning to wonder. My question is how does the fitting of a new engine work in terms of marrying up paperwork matching engine VIN numbers etc and would this be likely to affect the resale value, what happens to the mileage indicator. Could she just insist on a brand new replacement car instead? Many thanks for your help

If you accept the new engine then you I reckon that means the dealers have fulfilled their obligations. If you really don't trust the car now then it's you really ought to get the legalposition from citizen's advice or the AA etc. certainly send a letter asap rejecting the car.

Ford engines come from the factoy with no number on them. When they are fitted into the car the garage should stamp the original number on the new engine. That way the numbers always match.

I don't doubt the veracity of that statement but if engines leave factory w/out a number how do recalls and updates get dealt with?

These days most engines have a barcode stuck on at the beginning of the assembly process, this is read as it moves and ensures the right parts are installed.

In cases where an engine is being supplied as in this case, the dealer may record this on the system to tie it to the 'original' number stamped, perhaps?

Not quite sure what that means but I can tell you its 100% correct. Said it on here before but when I bought a brand new crate 2 litre Zetec for my "classic" it came with no number on it. Asked the supplier what i should do and he explained that it was intended that you stamp the old number onto the new engine. The Ford VIN actually includes the engine number in the code, if the engine number were to change theoretically the VIN would need changing and what a nightmage that would be.

The engine has a barcode sticker on the front and that number may well get cross referenced with your reg on Fords computer to deal with recalls and updates. In my case that was irelevant, think the warranty ended the moment I got the engine home and stripped all the redundant bits off it.

Ford engines don't have engine numbers on them;they usually have part of the chassis(VIN) number stamped on them.

Thank you everyone for replying. From the comments and asking around we think we'd be pushing it asking for a new car after only one (albeit a major one) breakdown. We'll have the new engine installed and see what Ford do re paperwork etc. I guess as its all warrantied etc it shouldn't affect the resale value. If I learn anything from the dealership about the process I'll post it on here. Once again thank you for your input

how common is this problem with the new 1.0 eco boost engine?

Exactly what I said. The Ford VIN has the engine mumber in the centre of it.

The first 2 letters of the engine number tell you the year and month of manufacture.

The Ford VIN is in the following format on recent cars WFOAXXGABA4D12345. The last 7 character/digits are the engine number which will be stamped on the engine block. The letter code 4D tells you the date of manufacture which in this instance would be July 2004.

The 4D would be date of manufacture of vehicle-not necessarily of engine-if you go into Ford ETIS it will give you day of manufacture.

Vehicle or engine no idea (probably is the vehicle) but the 4D would be stamped on both the engine and on the VIN plate.

Engines would have to be shipped from an engine assembly plant to vehicle assembly plant-could be halfway around the world(not just for Ford)-Niehl(Cologne) certainly does vehicles and engines on the same site but it won't be all types of engine and all models of cars.
