VW Touran (2006) - ESP failure - Walter White

I took my Touran to a local garage to fix a slow puncture on rear nearside. After the garage fixed it I collected the car. As soon as I turned the key the ESP dashboard light (a pic of a car with skid marks) wouldn't turn off.

I showed the mechanic who just grunted that it wasn't anything he did. Really??? When I left the car with the garage there were no warning lights on the dashboard. Then as soon as I turn the key I now get a warning about ESP not working and that's without me even moving the car fronm the garage forecourt. Mechanic just said pump has gone so need to stick it on the diagnostic machine.

Would anyone happen to know if there's a possibility he could have knocked a sensor or the like? For me, it's too much of a coincidence that as soon as someone finishes working on my rear wheel the ESP doesn't work and I'm being told the two aren't related.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Check the ESP button is turned on.

Possibly damaged the ABS sensor or wiring on one of the wheels. Maybe jacked it where the wires run?

Now where would I look first?

Unlikely to be a wheel sensor,as the abs light would be on also.Very possibly a fault with the pressure sensor in the abs modulator ,an extremely common problem on this model and many others.

Thanks for the response. I have read-up and see there are issues with ESP on Tourans and other motors. However, I just can't believe the ESP has failed in between the mechanic changing the wheel and then me picking the car up when done. I hadn't even left the garage forecourt when the ESP warning light appeared. That's why I'm wondering if he could have knocked something.

Thanks

Not sure what your point is; it's obvious where to look. I'm just trying to get an insight into how ESP works as the mechanic just baffles me with stuff I don't understand. As soon as I mention the ESP light he just says "nah mate, nothing to do with what I was doing". I just need to make sure that the sensor could be affected by a wheel change.

The ESP sensor that fails on these models is set within the ABS control unit so there would be no chance of damaging it by changing a wheel. If a sensor or wire to the wheel had been damaged the ABS warning will be on. This situation is unlikely as the sensors are pretty robust and mounted internally on the hub, likewise the wiring harness runs from the hub along the upper suspension link arm so the possibility of damaging either is very, very slim.

Have you had the error code(s) read out yet ? If by some remote chance it's a wheel sensor it'll state which wheel is at fault. However, from experience, I think you'll find it will most likely be the pressure sensor in the ABS modulator.

Many thanks for the explanation; very informative. From what you say I think I'll ask the garage to have the error codes read. If it's pointing at the wheel, then I think they need to take the hit. If, on the other hand, it indicates something else then I'll take the hit. Thanks again.

Thanks for the response. I can't turn the ESP back on as the button doesn't do so. The article you've kindly provided states this is because there is something wrong with the ESP pump or module.

I think I'll mention what you say about the ABS sensor. I just can't belive my ESP has independantly failed in between the mechanic doing his work on my tyre and me then turning the key in the ignition. I hadn't even driven away from the garage!

Many years agao I knwe a guy who worked at a national tyre chain, he told me that it was common practice for fitters to swap dodgy bits (carburettors etc) from customers cars to theirs or their mates.

Maybe you had yours swapped?
