2007 Toyota Avensis 2.2D4D - Waterpump Replacement - yeomand4d

At a lowly 82000 miles, have found the waterpump is leaking. Topping up expansion tank twice weekly

Local trusted indie is quoting best part of £900-£1000 for the job due to having to lift out the engine. Apparently "no room to get the pump off in situ".Local Toyota dealer confirm this, also weren't very flattering about the 2.2 engine.

Has anyone ever managed to replace the pump without the grief of removing engine?

I'm a smidge too honest to look at trading it in with the fault.

If it were me id probably put some k seal in it (better version of radweld) and trade it in.

should stop the leak..

Water pump replacement on these can be done without removal of engine. It is a tight fit but do-able by a competent mechanic.hth

Although a different car, I'm guessing my Carina may be similar in engine layout and access available. My local garage quoted me 3 hours to do this but when I picked the car up, he said it was an absolute nightmare of a job and took 6 hours! He honoured the 3 hours though but said he wouldn't in the future. Maybe, it is an engine out job?

Thanking you all kindly for the responses Found a different Indie who took the approach of 'leave it me a couple of day's, its a pig to do, but possible. £275 all in'

Think narrow fingers were the answer.

Still concerned by the Head-gasket issues with this car, and tbh, am disappointed by general build quality of the car & poor fuel consumption.

Looking at maybe 2.0 petrol Mondeo or Peugeot 5008 1.6 petrol turbo as replacement, around 2010 models. ( do around 10k/yr mileage so petrol over diesel?)

Any opinions welcome.

The Peugeot/Citroen diesels are very good for economy, my early C5 will do over 60 mpg driven gently and the 406 nearly 70 mpg but only the 2.0.L versions the 2.2s are rubbish.

Had a Y plate 406 Estate before the Avensis. A super car, 156k with nothing but scheduled maintenance. A friend still has it. Sadly the 407 wasn't a contender.

Only thinking of petrol for the next change, too many posts about Diesel disasters and a lowish annual mileage puts me off the black pump.

I can see the logic in that but I buy 10 year or more old diesels, not only are they very cheap but much simpler and cheaper to repair than the newer ones, I can still repair them myself, I wouldn't like to take on a newer one.
