Your lack of grammer may upset some here, but you came for advice, not a lesson.

I suggest you get yourself along to Citizens Advice and see what they say. Take all the paperwork you have along with you.

Did you actually receive a cash advance for attending a course? If they insist you owe them money, and can prove it, offer £1 a month.

I would buy a folder, or filing box, then go through all of your paperwork, sort it out, and summarise the details. At least you will then have a record, and it will be kept in one place for easy access in future. (I keep records going back 10 years+. A tad retentive perhaps but HMRC are one of the few organisations entitled to make a forced entry into your home ... )

"....today I received a letter saying I owe them 2962 pounds, from an advance for a course I'm guessing but not yet verified".

You are entitled to more explanation from whoever is demanding this amount from you - they have no right to expect you to guess. If it is an advance for a course, it should be documented.

Citizens' Advice as suggested may well be a good idea - but first get some more information from 'them' (whoever they are), as Citizens' Advice can help you only if you have the information.

There is an independant charitable organisation called the SSFA (Soldiers and Sailors Families Association) who advertise a freephone number for advice for ex-forces personnel.

0800 731 4880

Sounds like a sort of Citizens Advice bureau for ex-soldiers.

Be a nice gesture if there was some sort of an update?
