2006 BMW320DM sport - Crankshaft problem - Crudp1

I have a BMW320DM 2006 plate, it has recently been diagnosed with a snapped crankshaft - do i have recourse to BMW as it must be a manufacturing fault a crankshaft should be fit for purpose for more than 61k miles - BMW have kindly offered to strip down my engine to asses the problem at £185 per hour and may or may not apply some good will to the project. - Do i have any recourse for BMW to pay the whole bill?

Thats a difficult one, is it full up to date BMW service history, if so there is a possibility of decent goodwill but at 7 years old i wouldn't be holding my breath.

Trouble is whats are we looking at to strip down and assess, 2/4/8 hours?, you could be up to £1400 and not a step closer to a resolution if they decide to say no, that cost could be a large chunk towards a fix at a good BMW indy @ £50 an hour.

I'd try and get some sort of written agreement for some sort of fair contribution before i agreed to the plan as it is, an idea of their solution and contribution if found i your favor would at least give you some figures to work with.

If they are going to fit a new engine @ £10k and only contribute 50% to parts cost then you could still see a bill of £7/8k including labour.

Course they might well fit a new crank and bearings and only ask you for a 50% contribution to parts alone, so £1k might be your part.

Very unlikely IMO for them to stump up the whole lot unless the historry is impeccable and your customer history long standing...but that only my opinion.

See thats no help to you at all, sorry..

One other thought, at that ridiculous hourly rate you must be in the south east, yes?, if so it might be worth a call to these people www.pmwltd.co.uk/ no association to them other than as a satisfied and impressed customer, The Man there is knowledgeable and friendly and would offer some good advice and may well be able to offer you an alternative to consider before plunging.
