Hi everyone,

we were driving down motorway when red flashing oil light appeared (probably should of stopped straight away) anyway was trying to get to service station wife two kids in car got up slip road around roundabout then car died. AA would not look at it because of red light policy had it towed home, I s diagnostic check going to tell me anything my feeling is i might have a broken cam belt as it was overdue a change, My dilema now is after reading a fair bit about this sought of problem instead of throwing money at this problem do i jusyt bite the bullet and put a new engine in from a write off Audi, Have been quoted £1900 for 2009 engine 30k miles supply and fit with a warranty?

Any thoughts welcome

Try to find out what an independent Audi / VW specialist would charge for the repair and compare with the £1,900 you've been quoted for the replacemernt engine.

If you broke the cam-belt the engine would've stopped straight away.

How long between warning light coming on and engine stopping?

If the cam belt has broken,I would suspect this is the result not the cause.The oil light on suggests that either you have run out of oil or there is a problem with the oil pressure supply sysytem.The engine has probably seized.hth

Flashing oil light means STOP IMMEDIATELY (road and traffic conditions permitting). Driving with it on for 15 miles will have ronnied the engine totally. A broken cam belt would have stopped the engine instantly.

My wife recently drove home from work with the red battery warning light on, as well as headlights and fan going!!! I had to remind her what a red light means - just like a red traffic light. Here endeth todays lesson! A very expensive lesson in your case.

Also, what's this "red light policy"?

I don't know, but it may well be that the AA won't let a car be driven anywhere with a red warning light showing - otherwise if any further damage were done the customer would jump on the legal bandwagon and try for a free repair by suing the AA, saying it was their fault.
