Ford Fiesta - 2005 Fiesta Clutch or Gearbox Problems - URGENT - ben1002

Ok, Picked up a new fiesta last night. Lovely car, been taken good care of. One issue I have found though, only started this morning.

Very hard to get into gear and crunches when going into reverse. However, the clutch is NOT slipping at all.

It goes into gear fine when the engine is not running, which to me indicates a clutch problem

When sitting in first gear with the clutch to the floor, the car still judders a bit as if the clutch is still making contact, stick it in neutral and this stops

Its a 1.4 Duratec.

Thanks

Needs a new clutch

Ford Fiesta - 2005 Fiesta Clutch or Gearbox Problems - URGENT - ben1002

Surely if it was the clutch it would be slipping, I know the clutch self adjusts, but is there a way of manually adjusting it?

What sort of price would I be looking at for a new clutch on this model?

Thanks

No, there's no adjustment possible, the clutch is hydraulic and self adjusting.

Sounds like the clutch is dragging so it's not completely disengaging when the pedal is actuated. Of course, it could also be a gearbox fault.

I suggest you return the car as soon as possible and explain all this to them.

Just has a couple of quotes for a new clutch on a Mondeo, so I wouldn't expect the cost to do a clutch on a Fiesta would be significantly different. Both quotes £500 plus or minus a few quid either way. But you've only just bought the car; you shouldn't be having to pay out for a new clutch straight away.

Edit........Did you purchase this car from a dealer or privately? If the latter then you're probably on your own, I'm afraid. Didn't you have a test drive before purchase?

Being 19 I was only insured to drive my own car, my Mum however, took it for a test drive. But she is female so... ;)

To be honest, it felt fine when I drove it home after getting my insurance transfered over. But it was a private sale unfortunatly.

Fiesta should be much cheaper;Mondeo usually needs the front suspension dropped to remove g/box;not required on Fiesta.

Got a quote for £192. Think I am just going to have it done.

Make sure that's the full set of plate, cover and release bearing. Not one of those bodged jobs of shoving in a new plate and hoping it works until the warranty on the job expires.

Particularly as it sounds like it's the release side of things that's on the way out in your case.

Yea, it was just for the plates. This was with Mr Clutch, when I actually dropped the car off I got a final price for everything and it was like £267. It is being done today anyway. I managed to get the guy I bought it off to pay £100 towards it as it went the day after I bought it.

You did well to get them to contribute - sounds like they knew it was on it's way out....

Hi All,

My daughter just bought a 2008 model with same problem, according to the Garage she bought it from Ford sent a bulletin out in the manufacuring year that the gear box has no sincromesh for the reverse gear. The problem has obviously been happening for a number of years and there has been no inclination to fix the problem at all as there are a number of complaints over the web relating to the same complaint.( A cost cutting exersise by the back room I think ?)

The Garage the car was bought from has agreed to take it back and replace it with a same value car but how long will that be ? in the meantime the cars off the road and from what I can see and having spoken to trading standards not a lot of room for action, what I would say is that if Ford had advertised the car as having no sincromesh with the resulting reverse gear problem nobody would have bought them and how they got away with this is a major concern for the future.

You do not need a sycro cone on first or reverse.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing so they say.

It is normal for there to be no synchromesh on reverse. Has been since Mr Benz was a lad.

Absolutely so. Synchromesh is to help engage a gear while moving - it is normal to only engage reverse when stationary, so not needed. Of course if the OP has a habit of revving in neutral before trying to get reverse he will get a nasty crunching noise because the cogs in the gearbox will be spinning.

Sorry I hold my hands up I am wrong I always thought sincro was to ease the gear in while other gears are still spinning,so have to ask now why are so many peolple experienceing problems with the fiesta reverse gear since at least 2005 till present day and if there is a fix apart from the ones already mentioned and the fix from Ford (As was told on the phone to dealership) was to take the transmission off and slap more grease in as alledgedly not greased up properly on the assembly line ? Any info would be gladly apreciated please.

This doesn't ring true either. Garboxes are not filled with grease, but with manual transmission fluid (which is usually something like a 30 weight oil with friction and extreme pressure modifiers). Can you illucidate on this point?

It's important when changing into reverse that one does so with the car stationary. One should pause at stationary with the car in neutral before pressing the clutch and then move gently into reverse. If the gears are still spinning fast from forward motion crunching is likely to follow.

Try changing the mtf. I used Torco RTF in my Rover Turbo PG1 box for 70k and it was excellent. I've recently fitted Red Line MTL into my Saabs F40 box and can report an improvement in running and shifting (it's also popular with Scooby owners). You're looking at about £50 for a 'box refill but it's money well spent imo.

Yes, I wondered myself about that statement, too. I think they could possibly be talking about greasing the Input Shaft. The gearbox itself, of course, contains oil.
