3500 kg limit - movilogo

I used to think that in normal category B license one can drive vehicles up to 3500 kg.

However, if the vehicle is EV, then weight limit goes up to 4250 kg!

Some motorhomes are heavier than 3500 kg which currently requires C1 license (from 3500 to 7500 kg limit). I wonder whether this is bring EV versions of those motorhomes (when available) within car license limit.

Depends of when you passed your test, if before 1st Jan 1997, you can drive a 7.5t truck on a car license.

But for those who passed their test later, 3.5t was the heaviest you could drive. This could be a single vehicle, or the combined weight of one vehicle pulling a trailer.

If the allowable weight has been upped for an EV, this is most certainly because of the extra weight of a battery pack. This doesn't necessarily mean you can drive anything bigger than before though, as it is quite possible that an electric van with a MAM (maximum allowable mass, what used to be known as GVW - gross vehicle weight) 4250kg will have the same payload as a similar sized ICE van with a MAM of 3500kg.

Don't you lose that if you're over 70, unless you have an annual medical?

Yes, ish - the C1 is forfeit at age 70 unless you take/pass the truckers medical every 3 years.

Error correction needed - the 3500kg limit applicable to those passing their car test after 1st Jan 1997 applies to car or vehicle - they can also tow a trailer up to 3500 kg making a theoretical outfit of 7000 kg.

There was a short-lived period when the combined outfit was limited to 3500 kg but the was removed some years ago.

When an empty Transit EV is circa 2500kg add in three people at 200kg it doesn’t leave much for a load. Government therefore had no choice to increase the 3500kg limit for EV vans.

I passed my Class B as it was then in 1985 and could drive upto 7 1/2 tonnes + a trailer. When I was diagnoed with Diabetes and on Insulin, I was recstricted to 3500kg + trailer to the MAM of the towing vehicle, there was some chat recently to increase this limit for EEV's to (I think) 5,000 kg, I could be wrong in that, there could be some more information on the DVLA website
