I used to think that in normal category B license one can drive vehicles up to 3500 kg.
Depends of when you passed your test, if before 1st Jan 1997, you can drive a 7.5t truck on a car license.
But for those who passed their test later, 3.5t was the heaviest you could drive. This could be a single vehicle, or the combined weight of one vehicle pulling a trailer.
If the allowable weight has been upped for an EV, this is most certainly because of the extra weight of a battery pack. This doesn't necessarily mean you can drive anything bigger than before though, as it is quite possible that an electric van with a MAM (maximum allowable mass, what used to be known as GVW - gross vehicle weight) 4250kg will have the same payload as a similar sized ICE van with a MAM of 3500kg.
