Toyota Corolla - New budget or 3year Pirelli P7 tyres? - myjess

Dunno if I have done the right thing, but I bought 2x Pirelli P7 for front of car. They are dated 2022 and tread depth is practically as if brand new.

No issues so far with these.

Should I have bought Rotalla budget brand spanking new tyres from Modern cars instead?

Thanks.

To be honest I'm not a fan of used/part worn tyres as you don't know the history.

Having said that 2022 is only 3 years old, some tyre places might have tyre stock that's older than that! In addition with a Corolla they can be prone to a touch of tyre/road noise so a quieter tyre will help a lot - the P7 has a reasonable rating re noise.

As BJ says, it depends a lot on what kind of life those tyres have had, Tyres last pretty well in cool and dark conditions, as rubber degrades photochemically in the presence of oxygen (in the atmosphere), faster when it is warm. Good idea to have got a good brand, but look for any fine surface cracking as evidence of degradation. A diligent MoT tester should warn if things don't look good.

Tyres look fine as far as I can twll.

But used tyres can look fine even when the car they were fitted to suffered a bad accident, any damage could not be visible.

There are laws regarding the sale of used tyres in the UK

  • tyres must have at least 2mm of tread depth across the entirety of their ‘contact patch’
  • tyres must have no damage
  • tyres must be clearly marked with the words ‘part-worn’ on their side walls in letters at least 4mm high.

Did the seller comply with all those 3, if not report to trading standards.

I'd take the PIrellis over Rotalla if there's no visible damage.

Definately.

Every used car normally comes on used tyres, with a used tyre you can inspect it both inside and the whole outside.
