peugeot 208 1.2 2015 - Peugeot 208 sudden oil drop no leak - notharrisonford

Hi.

Looking for help with my wifes 2015 Peugeot 208 1.2 petrol with 65000 miles.

Late last year after checking the oil, which i do at least every other week i noticed it had lost at least a litre of oil since i last checked so i topped it up and took it to the Garage and was told that no leaks but some older cars burn oil and just keep topping it up.

Checked a few times and had to up slightly

Unrelated, the car then had a new clutch and new wet belt along with oil and filter change.

I checked the oil weekly and it stayed at the correct level until this week when the wife said the Engine felt strained so I checked the oil which showed nothing on the dipstick so I topped up with nearly 2 litres of oil, checked for leaks and took back to the Garage who of course didn't really want to check and said it will just be burning oil. Took it anyway and Garage confirmed no leaks and just burning oil.

The thing i don't understand is that the car isn't losing oil gradually (worn piston rings) but loses it all of a sudden in one go

I appreciate your advice as have already spent a lot on this car. Trade in is an option but I have an Autistic son who really struggles with change, especially cars.

Thank you for taking the time to read

If it’s not leaking oil , it must be burning it . Can’t see how it would lose it in one go . Usual suspects are piston rings and valve guides . No cheap fix , unfortunately.

Surely if a car loses a lot of oil in a short time there will be signs, traditionally in blue smoke behind ? I've never heard of a car oscillating between using lots and very little ?

Suggest changing how and when you check the oil level, and upping the checks to every few days in the same parking spot if possible.

Many handbooks suggest to check the oil level when the engine is warm, leaving it 5 minutes after stopping to drain down before doing so, i believe you get a better check like this anyway.

PCV valve is a know failure point on the Purec*** engine which leads to sudden oil consumption issues.
