Any - New Electric car - Cris_on_the_gas

Thinking of getting electric car. Not sure if what I want exists or not.

Criteria I have thought of are:

Less than £40k

0-60 in less than 6 seconds

Top speed in excess of 140mph

Range in excess of 300 miles

Ability to accept 100kWh charging.

5 door hatchback or SUV style, but if SUV must have reasonably low front passenger seat

Any idea what car would suit all the requirements

Top speed in excess of 140mph

Any specific reason for this? Are you thinking of track days?

Yes and also German Autobahns

I've not been through vehicle specifications, but I'd say you're a little while off being able to buy a car that meets those criteria. It's all achievable, apart from the budget.

Give it a couple of years and we'll have such a thing, but I'd guess not now.

Track days and Autobahns in a £40k electric car with a 300 mile range and 140+mph top speed?, er no, it doesn't exist.

An electric car with a 300 mile range is going to have a big battery, which is going to be very heavy. This, along with how doing a track day will affect the range (catastrophically), how all that weight is going to affect the tyres on a track day (catastrophically) means an EV, at the moment, is entirely unsuitable for a track day. A lap or two round a track?, fair enough, but a track day?, no.

And the Autobahn. Well, if you were to consider something like a Golf 1.5TSI (150bhp). At 70mph in average conditions, it will probably be doing around 50mpg. At its 140mph top speed, that figure is going to be 15mpg, possibly less, certainly no higher than 20. It has an 11 gallon fuel tank, so at that speed, it will be empty in 165 miles, rather than the 550 miles at 70mph, which is a 70% drop in range. Same applies to EV's, the drop in range travelling at 140mph rather than 70mph is going to be absolutely huge, and because of the charging time needed for the extra stop or stops, you won't save time by doing 140mph, you'll lose it, or to be more accurate, waste it.

This is the reason so many electric cars, sensibly, have a speed limiter.

And unrestricted autobahns are getting rare nowadays!

Standard spec Tesla 3 would seem closest to what you want but that is still over 40k.

Thank you, initially not keen on the Tesla due to its large multi function screen. Might consider it more as there is a Tesla dealer in Cambridge quite close to me.

The £40k budget was something I initially thought of but can go a bit higher to get right car. I tend to keep my vehicles 10 years plus and prefer to buy new.

Any other ideas, much appreciated

They will be even rarer after the September election. With the Greens in power you will be seeing a blanket limit of 120 kmh.

Surely that's a good idea as it will remove one of the big reasons why manufacturers build cars and bikes that are capable of insane speeds that cause all motoring journalists can shout 'woo-hoo' when they floor the throttle.

Either price or top speed has to give. As 140mph will be used so rarely I'd seriously consider a Mustang mach-e at just over £40k.

Just looked up Mustang mach-e. Interesting and seems to fit the requirements although Ford web site says currently out of stock. Personally not keen on Fords, brought a brand new Escort Mk3 in 1984 and had no end of issues with it until I sold it for peanuts in 1992 cos it was shot.

You might want to check if you can charge an EV at home, i.e. your home has a driveway/garage capable of fitting said car (EVs like Teslas aren't exactly small) and your hom'es electrical supply is capable of accepting a home fast charger (not the same as the ones in car parks which are far more powerful).

If so, then add on the cost (minus any government grants) to your budget, as you'll likely need it for a car with a long range battery.

Yes got capability to have 32A in garage and size of garage would accommodate car up to 5m long.

Appreciate I would not get 100kWh charging at home but if left overnight on a 7kW charge that should be sufficient.

Blimey, that is surely taking a grudge to extremes?, you buy a new Ford 37 years ago which turns out to be rubbish (as many cars were at the time!), and that's it, no more Fords!.

Maybe so but since ditching the oval badge I have had some good Japanese and British cars.

Anyway going forward Ford Mustang e-mach and Tesla model 3 are on shortlist. Will be arranging test drives soon.

Any other suggestions ?
