Not looking for high end tyres any particular sites you recommend price wise please ??

I always shop around online at sites like mytyres or tyreshopper. In then look online places like Kwik fit and see what they can do. I never just go directly to the shop.

Depending on brand and tyre performance and price differential I then decide. I always insist on at least B grade wet grip.

I've used Camskill, Tyreleader, Mytyres (all three several times), Oponeo and Tyremen (once each), all have had good deals on something on my short list at various times, they seem to go through pricing stages, Camskill is solely UK based as far as i can tell, never had a single issue with any of them.

There's also Tyrecomp, a tyre price comparison site which doesn't include all of the ones above, and i haven't bought from any of the people listed on this site.

Used to use a local indy, the manager was most accommodating for those like me who have particular tyre choices, i tend to buy non premium european or Japanese made tyres of certain makes i've come to trust over the years, sadly the manager left and the new one is like most other places where they want to sell you what they want not what you want, their loss.

Have used Tyreleader successfully in the past but on the last occasion the tyres went missing in transit. Soon realised why they are cheap - total lack of a customer service function and took a long time to refund. I had to go elsewhere and actually almost matched their price at KwikFit. Would never recommend them.

Now I start looking around early and have found good deals at Blackcircles, Tyres on the Drive, Halfords and a few other places. If you are a little flexible on brand you will find manufacturer offers from time to time and can often combine with Topcashback and credit card or bank offers.

I replaced all four tyres a few months ago. Did the usual searches on line, mytyres, Camskill, Blackcircles and Balckcircles were cheapest.

When I selected the fitter unbeknown to me it was the garage I use for MOT, brakes etc.

Called in for a price and they quoted £5 a tyre less than Blackcircles, they also had a £10 off four tyres voucher online, so £30 saved.

I like to support local business but at the same time I don't like paying more than I need for tyres or anything else. So I do my searching on line and print out the deals I am happiest with and take this to to local tyre fitters and ask if they can match or better the online prices. This has worked well for a good few years.

I get the impression most of the smaller independent tyre retailers buy their tyres from the same central wholesaler and all pay pretty much the same price.

I buy my tyres online.

I look at tests and reviews, decide which tyres i want, buy them on Ebay and have them fitted at a local garage.

I buy my tyres online.

When I needed one new tyre recently I was surprised by how much cheaper it was to buy it from ATS online and make an appointment at my nearest branch for the fitting - compared with going there and ordering the same tyre.

I used to use a local one man tyre place. It was almost a tent in local business park but he had been there a long time and was recommended by the garage I used to use. After bad experience I would not trust Kwikfit to check pressures... Found a local independant and had a slow puncture mended on the wifes Jazz. Very friendly and well run. Torque wrench used to tighten up ( a very good sign ) and several sporty/expensive cars being seen to. Try a more local web search.

Prices and offers fluctuate but I usually find Blackcircles best for me. They are seldom absolutely cheapest but they use ATS locally for fitting, by appointment slot, which is very convenient. Other cheaper suppliers would entail a 25 mile round trip to the fitter which takes out most of the saving.

When I can, I wait until they have one of their regular offers on. Not what the OP is looking for but Michelin Cross Climate are often competitive. Probably helped by Michelin, Blackcircles and ATS all being part of the same group, unless I am mis-remembering?

A couple of years ago I needed 4 new tyres before the winter set in. Looked at the usual suspects on-line and got some good prices. A fitter I had used several times for repairs had already quoted £10 a tyre to fit inc valve and balance plus £2 a tyre to dispose of the old ones.

Cannot remember which site it was but they offered to post the tyres to a "fitting centre" who would then do the necessaries for an all in price for an additional £15. When I researched their centres they were all back street garages and scrap yards, god knows what they would do to your alloys.

But buying on-line and fitting locally still is a huge risk. What happens if one of the supplied tyres should be damaged on delivery or worse still damaged by your fitter who then said it must have already been damaged. It would be certain to end up in a long acrimonious argument and all the time you would potentially be driving on odd tyres.

Before I ordered I rang round the local tyre shops and I got a result almost immediately. An all inclusive price £10 lower (for 4) and no messing about on-line and locally with no risk, if there is a problem you simply don't pay them.

It might work for mega expensive rubber band tyres on prestige cars but not on a boggo Focus.

You jest, surely, a huge risk?!!!. There may, techincally be 'a risk', but in actual fact, it would be small enough to barely exist!.

How would even the most ham fisted delivery driver manage to damage a set of tyres?. And if your indy garage is incapable of fitting a tyre without damamging it, they must be pretty hopeless!. I have fitted and balanced plenty of tyres myself in the past, it really isn't hard unless the tyres are ultra low profile.

This is exactly situation where i'd have second thoughts about buying tyres the way i do. For the simple reason that huge, ultra low profile tyres are much harder to fit because there is so little flex. I have been buying tyres through Ebay now for quite a few years for the van i use for work. Firstly a Transit Connect, and curremtly a VW Caddy, both of which take 195/65x15's.

I can thoroughly recommend DCM Tyres in Shaftesbury, Dorset and Total Tyres in Woodley, Berks. Both independents and both willing to repair punctures which I suspect the big chains wouldn't have: I get the impression that some of the big chain managers are basically salesmen on commission.

As CHarkin says, the independents are unlikely to be more expensive than the chains. They wouldn't last long in business if they were.

I've bought my replacement tyres or had repairs using every variation:

My first car's tyres were replaced back in 2002/3 by going direct to ProTyre's Enfield branch, back when they were a smaller outfit generally (their original branch in Micheldever had just won tyre dealer of the year apparently) and had a better reputation for customer service and price than it seems they do today.

They even wrongly quoted me £15 less for the tyres I went for, but honoured the quote. A good service all-around, though I did have to travel (then) 20 miles there and back to get the tyres - worth it though. A shame their reputation has gone downhill in the intervening period as they grew as a firm (presumably all the branches are franchises).

As you'll see below, I went to a local frnahcise to have a new set fitted on my current car and had a less satisfactory experience.

I used a local indie tyre fitter (very small) in my parents home town (I was still living with them at the time) a couple of years later for a tyre plug when I found a nail in my car's tyre tread blocks, causing a slow leak. Cost me £10 and worked a treat.

My current car had its first set of new tyres at the aforementioned local franchise of ProTyre in 2012, only open a couple of weeks. I'd sourced the tyres via Blackcircles, which were the cheapest, and this fitter was on their top-level of fitters. No problems with the online order, everything arrived at the dealer ok and I had them changed out about 3 days after ordering them.

Unfortunately, one tyre kept on going down after fitting (no problems on that score before), and they would not refit the tyre for free, saying it was because the wheels were 6yo and corrosion/feormation was to blame. I gave them one chance, paying another £10 ish, but the problem did not go away. I phoned my local Mazda main dealer I used for servicing, and they offered to do the same for free the same day - done and fixed in 15 minutes.

Needless to say, that experience changed my opinions somewhat. The ProTyre franchise soon stopped and is now an indie, though with essentially the same logos as before but with a slightly different name. Sounds to me like they quickly got a bad rep and were kicked out of their franchise (though I cannot prove anything).

Still, I stuck with both Blackcircles as I've never managed to source the tyres I want cheaper, especially when they have deals on, but the next time I swapped out the 2012 set of tyres, I bought them via BC and had them delivered to me at home, and then took them to my Mazda dealership to be fitted (who were a bit cheaper on the fitting than an 'approved fitter' via BC). I was already having replacement alloy wheels fitted there anyway, and they weren't charging me for the fitting of them, which tyre fitters would do.

The actual fitting was all fine, though the Mazda dealer ordered the wrong alloys (I accepted them with a nice £25 discount and no charge for the tyre fitting [£65 off in total]), but that's another story (I have talked about this on another thread a while ago).

I have a tyre dealer (was Kwik Fit, now Tyre City) just 150yds away from my home, though I'd only ever consider using them in a dire emergency. I just hear too many tales of woe to trust them for anything of significance, just minor things like a tyre plug.

I suggest checking the online prices for the major high street retailers, in the past I have found these to be better aligned with the usual online retailers with all the convenience of using a local fitting station. Do shop around as not everyone advertises all brands in all sizes.

This is especially the case when buying just the one tyre often in a distress or semi distressed situation, also there is the added benefit that they may use existing stocks rather than wait for the ordered tyre to be delivered.

I would consider having a tyre repaired as something of major significance. If they get the repair badly wrong it could well end badly.

Just remember that a few square inches of rubber is all that separates you from meeting St Peter.

Recently had a couple of tyres fitted (Uniroyal Rain Expert 3). Found the best deal through Motokiki. Had them fitted at a place I wouldn't normally use. The 'manager' spouted loads of rubbish, but the lad that fitted them seemed to know his job and I've had no problems with balance.

I order mine nowadays from blackcircles or mytyres. They use a local chain garage,F1 ,that actually looks respectable. I'd not use an unknown back street garage. BTW F1 said that they could not order the tyres I wanted . Just done a search and ,bizarrely, H rated tyres are more expensive than V rated.

I have used discounted online ordering and fitting from National Tyres, usually excellent, but they have not stocked the tyres I was after more recently. Vredestein Quatrac5 or Michelin Energy.

When I needed one new tyre recently I was surprised by how much cheaper it was to buy it from ATS online and make an appointment at my nearest branch for the fitting - compared with going there and ordering the same tyre.

This is one of the reasons i buy tyres online and have them fitted by my trusty indy. Where i live there are no 'tyre places' like ATS. There are a couple of garages locally who supply tyres, but a very limited stock. There may be cheaper options if i lived in a more densely populated area, and while there is an ATS (along with a few Kwik Fit's) in Aberdeen, i very much doubt any potential savings over my method would overcome the hassle and cost of the 60 mile round trip!.

What I don't like about online sites is that they never give the age of the tyres they are offering. My suspicion is that if they are cheaper than the competition, they are close to or exceed the age (3 years) at which they are considered "new". Any experience of this?

Never had a problem on that score with Blackcircles - none of the two sets I ordered were more than 3 months old if I recall, though that only 8 tyres.

If the tyres are old stock Tyreleader state the year of make and they are heavily discounted, then its up to the buyer, if you are a high mileage user likely to get through them quickly then they would be good value, we're talking a max of 3 to 4 years old from my observations, otherwise all the tyres i've bought online, which is now many sets for the family fleet, have been very recent manufacture.

<< This is one of the reasons i buy tyres online and have them fitted by my trusty indy. Where i live there are no 'tyre places' like ATS >>

It seems to be standard practice to clean up the bead, fit a new valve and balance any new tyre, and the best-equipped places are usually specialists like ATS. My long-term 'indy' to whom I gladly entrusted any mechanical work wasn't able to compete in that area of expertise, and my limited experience of alloy-refurbing places suggests that they may not be quite up to it either.

Local independent for me. As cheap as anywhere and a large enough range in common sizes to arrive without phoning first. If I wanted a specific brand / model I would probably have to order it, but for normal cars the difference between the premiums Continental, Michelin etc is fairly insignificant so.I'm happy to get whatever they have. They don't sell Chinese no brand budget, cheapest tyres they had last time I was there were Falken which are perfectly decent mid range tyres.

They are a proper low budget operation with two old blokes in a small shed filled with tyres. Wheels get fitted to the car in the yard outside, no expensive four post lifts etc, just a trolley jack, basic air tools and torque wrench.

Every wheel has been perfectly balanced, and they even get the coloured dots in the right place.
