It sounds like the total repair even using people you know (luckily i too have a handy place for such events) is knocking on the door of £1000, might be worth asking around people you know for alternative bodyshops, one man and his dog type places where you arnt paying for layers of admin deep pile carpets and fancy coffee.
That figure is my guide line of whether to claim on my insurance policy for such an event, so from what you describe i'd be claiming, i assume you have a protected policy so will only lose one 'life' as it were, so you should keep full NCD, and the type of incident shouldn't really trigger any hefty premium increases come renewal, even if you don't have protection the premium increases plus loss of some NCD shouldn't be too drastic.
Course if you happened to find another Avensis breaking with two perfect doors, and in the right colour to boot (unlikely), at a reasonable price, that could change things considerably.
Through the insurer you will get a basic courtesy car, you might be car-less for a week or more getting it fixed by your mate.
I'm not big on having doors reskinned, they seldom prove as rust resistant as originals, but if it needed a new skin your mate being a classic restorer is a better bet than most normal bodyshops IMO.
