Nissan Micra - MOT advisory: oil leak - mikem004

Would you buy a used car that had an MOT advisory item in 2010 (25k miles ago) of "oil leak"?

Current owner, a dealer, knows nothing about this.

Service history doesn't mention anything serious.

Maybe it was an oil filter gasket or something.

It wouldn't bother me. If it hadn't been sorted, it would have reappeared as an advisory in the following year.

It reminded me of an advisory I got with my last car - "Steering rack starting to leak". I wanted to say "How do you know it's starting? It's either leaking or it isn't."

It had an advisory 6 years ago. If it hasn't re-appeared as an advisory since then, it almost certainly got fixed at the time.

I would not worry about it, but I would look for a leak now myself.

The trouble with an oil leak is that it can be something very minor and nearly instantly repaired- leaking or cracked gasket around a sump plug or something, to a serious leak from a gasket which is going to vent under pressure and kill the engine through oil starvation in short order. Of course it can always appear that there is an oil leak, when the reality is that all that oil in the enigne bay has appeared when a muppet like myself spilt the stuff when I was trying to top the engine up last time.

Regularly parking the car in a particular place over time will soon show you if you have an oil leak. Given the lenght of time and miles that has passed I would think it would be very obvious now if it had been left unattended.
