kia rio 1.4cdi - should i buy a diesel ? - jill hampson

My usage is changing and i am soon to be driving to devon via M4/M5 twice monthly, making a total mileage of 700. In addition to this i do around 400 miles comprising monthly around town, (most short journeys) and when i am in Devon longer distances on country and hilly roads.

I do not want to buy a large vehicle, and am viewing small hatchbacks such as yaris, Kia Rio. I think from my research and questions, that my best bet would be a diesel but a Toyota salesman, thought a hybrid would do well (although of course he wanted to sell it to me).

I know that 1.2 engines are a lot better than they used to be, and my plan is to purchase a car between 1 & 2 yrs old. Woudl a 1.4cdi hatchback be my best choice and if so any recommendations please. tks

I had a rio 1.2, very economical and a good drive.

less problems than a diesel. I now have a kia venga for the better seating position, but mpg not as good as the rio.

The problem area is your regular mileage - short town runs from cold are terrible news for modern diesels with DPFs.

Go petrol or hybrid. But diesel would be a mistake.

I'd suggest you're under the breakeven point to choose diesel - a hybrid would give better fuel consumption for your 400 miles around town, etc but worse consumption on your 700 miles to/from Devon.

So a small petrol car would get my vote - I had Hyundai i20 several times as courtesy cars, quite nice as small cars go.

IF you are driving on your own with no heavy luggage then a small engine / small car can be lively enough.

However when you load up a small car with passangers and luggage then it becomes hard work - you will really notice the difference.

I found my old 60 BHP small Polo ok on the motorway for occasional motorway drive but not my first choice for day in day out driving.

As i read it, 700 miles of motorway (via twice monthly trips to Devon) and 400 miles of combined town work and longer runs around Devon, every month.

If that breaks down to say 900 miles of open road and 200 miles of town work with only say a week or ten days of short runs between the longer journeys i reckon you would be reasonably safe with taking advantage of the Diesel economy.

However, can you be certain that sort of motoring will continue during your ownership, if for example you for some reason didn't have the Devon journeys for several months so the vast majority of your travel would be local then that would not be so good.

As always have good poke nose at HJ's reviews above, especially the good and bad section, see if any regular problems for the car you fancy are reported.

thanks for replies. bit varied i think but useful. i really fancy a hybrid having tried it but wonder will it be good for devon rural roads up to 40mph.? i guess that it will use petrol on hills at slower speeds.

liked the rio 1.25 petrol. there are a lot of diesel vehicles on the london roads i notice,

looked at Jazz and it was explained that they no longer do hybrid (i was interested as it gets which top buy) and said this was due to newer models having just as good economy and outdoing the previous hybrid.

On balance I think that one of the new breed of economical petrol engines should suit your needs best.

You also need to bear seat comfort in mind for your long trips. The smallest city cars will struggle and so will you: the Yaris and Rio as suggested are good ones for your shortlist, but add the Skoda Fabia, SEAT Ibiza or Leon and VW Polo to the list, preferably with the 1.2 TSI engine.
