I'm fairly certain the older Punto 1.2 engines are non-interference, that is the valves will not hit the pistons if the timing belt breaks or slips.

My gut feel is the belt has slipped, or the cloth has snagged on an electrical connector (for example the crankshaft or cam position sensor) and broken that.

The bottom sensor on the crank has broken. Do you think just changing that will solve the problem.

Change the sensor but also get a new cambelt kit fitted

Presuming it's non inteferance (most, but not quite all Fiat 1.2 8valve engines are OK - 16v aren't), then you've ducked a bullet. This would have really broken most engines!

I'm going to try tomorrow with out spending any money.

Because if it has Dan any damage it is cheaper just to bay anather engine and replace for under £100.

What on earth makes you think that an engine you can buy for £100 will be any good ?

I'll be honest : it doesn't sound as if you know what you're doing. Avoiding spending money on it (by trying to do it all yourself) might end up being more expensive than paying a proper garage / mechanic to work out the problem and fix it.
