Toyota Yaris? - Small Auto required for newly qualified driver - Steveieb

My sons girlfriend has passed her test and is looking for a small auto car for her first vehicle.

Discounted the Aygo after reading about Brums awful news.

Seen a lovely Yaris 1.3 WT-its on an 05 for sale for £3000 which is what she wants to pay.

Do you all agree that this makes a sound choice ?

Is this Yaris 1 or 2, if its 2 it will have the ill fated MMT automated manual transmission, one that should IMHO be avoided like all similar good for nothing efforts.

I believe the IQ 1.3 has Toyota's CVT box installed, but happy to be put right if that's not the case, IQ's seem to be around Yaris type prices now so might be worth a look...apart from that gearbox Toyota petrols take some beating.

The Mark 1 Yaris had a conventional auto box which was fine.

It also had an automated manual called Freetronic (the forerunner of MMT) which was pants and Toyota garages cannot solve problems. Spares for MMT and Freetronic are £££££££££s.

see:www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/yaris-1999/?s...d

Make sure you never ever buy any automated manual Toyota.

If you do not know which type it is, ask the selling garage.. and ensure they put it in writing . And make it part of the contract if you decide to buy.

Otherwise the conventional auto is very good.. And a well maintained Yaris shuld be very reliable. But at £3k it looks pricey and should be immaculate with full service history from a Toyota dealer to justify it.

edit: we have owned a Yaris diesel since 2005 (when it was 2 years old). It has been extremely reliable. Do check for rust under the rear though.

Agreed as above.Be very carefull when looking at "automatic"cars. Two pedals does not necessarily mean it has a proper auto box, rather than a mixed bag of manual and auto features.

The Nissan Note 1.6 petrol has a proper (TC) auto gearbox, which is very good. The gearbox and engine also VG are both made in Japan.

So grateful to all you contributors as it turns out the Yaris is fitted with a multimode gearbox which i assume is the one you refer to which had problems.

Can you confirm that I need to look for a Mk 1 Yaris Auto or maybe a Jazz of that era? or are there any other possibilities please ?

For the budget, most if not all Korean small autos will be of the torque converter type.

Toyota IQ as i said before i think comes with CVT box but that might be with the 1.3 engine so check first which is which, from what i read the CVT is proving to be reliable...something like this tinyurl.com/q2esowv advert title says 3495 but sales blurb say 3995

The automatic version of the Toyota IQ is a CVT, as is the third generation Yaris auto.

Hyundai and Kia use torque convertor automatics in their i10, i20, Picanto and Rio.

As best i can make out from HJ's reviews, above, both the 1.0 and 1.3 engines get Multimode transmission, which he descibes as 'seamless' changes, that suggests both engines get the CVT box then (which might not be everyones cup of tea), but obviously should the young lady even be remotely interested in an IQ, you'll be making the relevant enquiries.

Interestingly HJ gives IQ a full 5 stars.

edit, much obliged Auristocrat, CVT confirmed both engines.

As noted above I would go along with a Yaris BUT with the fully automatic torque converter box. They would be getting on in years now though and, as has been said, they subsequently swapped over to the automated manual and then, even more recently, the CVT.

The Hyundai i10 or i20 would be more recent and both have always had the old fashioned (but, almost certainly, significantly more reliable) torque converter four speed automatic box. My i10 automatic has this box and, in all honesty, the box is trouble free and reliable. The trouble is it saps powere hence is not so economical (32mpg) ... but if the buyer is limited in what they want to pay then, obviously enough, the choice will be limited.

It's odd that the bigger i20 seems to be more economical than the, smaller, i10...even though both have similar mechanicals and the i20 is bigger and heavier.

Many thanks again for all these useful posts.

If I fail to source a Mk 1 Yaris I plan to look for an early Jazz auto dating back to 2002/2003 which should fall in line with the £3000 budget.

Has anyone had any experience of this model please ?

Well, as it happens I had one (a CVT) and sold it not long before getting a couple of Hyundai i10s. Selling the Jazz was the worst mistake I've made. I should have kept it.

So, in answer to your question, yes I had one and yes I'd recommend one...provided you (they) managed to find a decent one, however, for £3k it's not going to be immaculate and faultless unless good fortune was with you. But a Jazz is less likely to have been abused than other similar type cars, so start looking. And good luck.

She could also consider a Suzuki Splash/Vauxhall Agila B - available with a torque-converter auto box: Japanese reliability at prices normally lower than a Jazz and usually a LOT lower than a Yaris.

Funnily enough i saw one of those Splash/Agilas the other day, yesterday now i come to it, and thought of this thread, good suggestion.

I've got one of those and can confirm that the torque convertor auto gearbox is extremely smooth.

Thanks or this suggestion. Would this car meet the criterion of a sub £3000 budget?

Possibly, but they wouldn't be easy to find. HJ's used car finder shows 17 Agila Bs for sale under £3,000 around the country, but they all have a manual gearbox. Autotrader shows 3 with auto gearbox. I've not checked for Suzuki Splash.

Thanks for finding out about the. Agila. Are they built in India ? Or Japan ?
Toyota Yaris? - Small Auto required for newly qualified driver - John Boy

The Agila B and Suzuki Splash were built in Hungary, but are no longer made. The Opel Agila B (same car) and Suzuki Splash achieved good reliability ratings in Germany:

I'm not certain, but I think they may be built in Hungary.

Hmm... Right now, Autotrader is showing just 2 Splashes with auto boxes even for between £3000 and 4000, and one of those is a Cat C.

Maybe have to look at other makes after all.
There are some Hyundai i10's and Kia Picantos out there, and I believe they have conventional auto boxes.

Finally found a lovely Mk 1 Yaris auto which I believe is a TQ version.

It has Park drive reverse 2 And L on the selector.

Can you tell from this that it is the conventional TQ auto box.

It's on a Y Reg and has a 1.3 engine

Many thanks

My neighbour has an X reg 1.3 which is a torque converter auto, so I would imagine yours will be too.

Previously he had a T reg 1.0 which was an automated manual. That managed 100,000 miles before the gearbox failed.
