Volkswagen Passat - Car Warranties (more specifically DSG cover!!!!!) - pitbull

Hi,

I have a VW Passat 2.0tdi DSG 2008. I bought the car with about 60k on. At 98k the DSG failed. It was reconditioned and needed a new mechatronics unit. All in was about 2k. Since then I have taken out an aftermarket car warranty. I would like to continue doing this but the trouble I have is that I am about to pass the 150k mark, I cover about 35-40k a year, nearly all motorway miles. All warranties I can find only seem to cover upto 120k or 150k at the most.

So now you have the background I am looking for either a generic car warranty that will cover my high mileage? Or if they exist one that will cover just the DSG box? I have little faith especially after reading other peoples stories online.

Thanks

Neil

I think you have to put yourself in the position of the potential insurer. Would you take on a car with 150k miles and fitted with a component (the DSG) which is known to be unreliable at high mileage?

Best to flog the car while the DSG is still OK: the 2.0 PD engine of that vintage has been known to give problems too. Difficult to recommend secondhand diesels, although your annual mileage justifies one. I think I'd go for a Ford Focus or Mondeo: plenty of them around and parts are easy to come by when needed.

The VW/Skoda 1.9 TDI engine is good, but best to go for a manual if you choose this.

Yup, as Avant says.

Any warranty you can buy for a car with that sort of mileage will be a joke anyway, with small limits, large excesses, and large numbers of exclusions - probably including 'wear and tear', or making you pay additional sums for 'betterment'.

At some point, the car becomes 'disposable' - ie. you run it until a major bill comes in.

The problem with this approach is that you either need a replacement car standing by, or budget for a hire car until you find the replacement.

You really want a newer car :-)

If you are doing that high mileage, it is best to buy a more modern (usually safer with auto brake, rudder guided cruise control etc.) toys.

Two ticking time bombs, three if you include EPB..:-)

I too would be inclined to out the car whilst its running ok, if either of those bombs go off you could end up with some serious bills, its done well up to now IMO so maybe quite while ahead?.

Motorway driving lends itself to manual and Diesel, so as the worries about DPF'd Diesels gathers publicity you could grab yourself a bargain that suits your unusual (for older car) mileage.

Don't know about the stuff Movi suggests, the last thing i want is a vehicle that decides when its going to brake and tells me off for venturing off a lane at 4am when there's not a soul for miles to indicate to...both those functions (and more unwanted rubbish) will no doubt be in my next lorry replacement due in two years, not looking forward.

I do have the 7 speed dry clutch DSG box and do have an aftermarket warranty (via the Civil Service Motoring Assn. (CSMA) and they have specifically said, when I asked, that they excluded the clutch aspect of the transmission because it's a known issue that was subject to a VAG warranty recall....and who knows what they would do concerning the remainder of the transmission? We won't know that until the worst happens (if it happens). But I'm not planning on selling the car in the short term as it's had it's replacement clutch pack under (VAG) warranty and drives perfectly and love the way the car, and the transmission, peform.

I suspect a failed clutch pack would not be covered under any 3rd party warranty, neither any bearings or oil seals. Which does not leave much in the box with is covered the is a common failure point.
