Audi Q3 - NEW WHEEL ? TYRE PACKAGE - NEW WHEELS

Living in Scotland I always fit winter tyres to my cars. I have recently purchased a new wheel / winter tyre package from WWW.Mytyres.co.uk. for a new car. Not being a wheel expert I chose the wheels very carefully from the mytyres website specifically for my Audi Q3. Apart from the wheels taking several weeks to be despatched, they had not been balanced correctly and worst of all had not been supplied with spacers (spigots) to take up the difference in size between the centre of the alloy wheel and the car's hub. This meant that the 5 x wheel bolts were taking excessive load, the wheels vibrated and the wheel arrangement would have been dangerous at motorway speeds. The solution was to have some inexpensive spigots produced for £30. Has anyone also had a similar experience? Is it possible to put pressure on Mytyres to supply new wheel/tyre packages that have been correctly balanced and that must be supplied with all safety essential components?

Bought a set of winter wheels/tyres recently from MyTyres, but they were steels. Perfectly balanced, a perfect fit, the TPMS works just as expected and delivered in decent time (3 weeks), no complaints.

But if yours are as "dangerous" as you say of course they have a responsibility to sort it.

Also MyTyres offer a full refund within 4 weeks if you are not happy so why did you keep them.

And if you paid by credit card they have responsibility to sort if the retailer will not.

Since you appear to have sorted it yourself its a bit late to complain.

I have had nothing but top class customer service from Mytyres, including a refund for the difference when the local to me mobile fitter on their website charged more than the site suggested.

Without the correct spigot ring to provide a snug central fit these wheels should not have been fitted to the car at all, without the correct spigot adapter they will never balance because they are travelling in eccentric circles.

I have no doubt Mytyres will sort things out if you give them a chance, i wonder if the spigot rings (cheap multi fit wheels?) were lost in transit.

Using t'interweb,I bought new, boxed, genuine VW 17" load-rated alloys for my Touareg for less than MyTyres wanted for steels - and I got my choice of winter tyre (Dunlop SP WinterSport D4) from Oponeo as MyTyres said they weren't yet in production!

My local independent, who I've used for years for everything other than warranty repairs/servicing, did the fitting/balance for £40 and only charges £40/year for storage of the spare set plus two swaps/year.

Not bothering with TPMS on the winters.

Not bothering with TPMS on the winters.

Presume you mean the car is not fitted with TPMS since its a legal requirement for it to be working if it was a factory fitment. There would be insurance and other implications if your were involved in an accident and a tyre issue was found to be to blame and the TPMS was not operating.

My understanding was that TPMS when fitted as standard must be working to pass an MoT (when the summer tyres will be back on) but not a specific offence otherwise?

The car has TPMS as standard and the sensors are within the wheel/tyre in the summers - the winters are fitted with aftermarket TPMS linked to the satnav I use when towing as that also displays/monitors the trailer tyre monitors.

It would probably not be an offence, however you would be in breach of insurance Ts&Cs for not telling them of a modification, and might be viewed as being in breach of Type Approval.

Basically, your car came with TPMS. Not having that system built into the car available for use - no matter what aftermarket system you may be using (and can you really claim that you ALWAYS use the SatNav based one ?), the system must be shown to be in use at all times - automatically - from startup.

If you had an accident that was due to an underinflated tyre, puncture, or other similar cause and the original in-built system was non-operational then your claim could be refused. That could also cause your insurance to be invalid, which would then be a specific criminal offence.

The above are undoubtedly a highly remote set of possibilities. But someone wins the lottery most weeks, and the chances of that happening are remote too !

It's not a modification - it's use of winter wheels/tyres of the size specified by the vehicle manufacturer - my insurers have been notified.

It's it contravenes anything I know I'm not alone as VW have changed the sensor specification for 2016 model year and it's not yet possible to buy compatible sensors - I guess the VW dealers could put them on back-order but that would mean them providing courtesy cars if a cars can't be legally used.

As I understand it vehicles which are subject to the TPMS obligations, must fit all the tyres with sensors.

That means :

  1. Since the 1st November 2012 all motor vehicles type approved in the EU must be equipped with a TPMS.

  2. From the 1st November 2014 all motor vehicles registered in the EU must have a TPMS.

But the the simple fact is if a vehicle came from the factory with a working TPMS system (even if it was not the law at the time for that particular vehicle to be fitted with such a system) it must continue to have an operating system. To operate the vehicle without is a modification and that may invalidate insurance or breach type approvals.

It should also be remembered that it has been a requirement for vehicles fitted with runs flats to have an operational TPMS system for well before the above dates. My first car with runflats was bought in 2005 and that had TMPS as did another bought in 2008.

I have been driving for most of my life without TPMS and survived through luck and good maintenance. Only had one blow out (A1 in 1975) and do not wish to repeat the experience. But in the 10 years we have had cars with TPMS we have had 2 punctures and the TPMS has allerted us on both occations well before either the tyre was damaged beyond repair or the safety of the car was affected.

4 TPMS valves fitted and calibrated by MyTyres when we bought the winter tyres/wheels were just over £80 extra and IMHO are cheap at that price.

VW have changed the sensor specification for 2016 model

If yours is a 2016 model you are breaking the law since you do not have an operating TPMS as required on all vehicles registered after 01 November 2014. The fact your car would not pass an MOT should tell you that. To use other examples it would not pass an MOT with bald tyres or non working brakes and would be illegal to use on the road.

my insurers have been notified

Have you told your insurers in plain English that the winter wheels/tyres are not fitted with TPMS valves as required by law for your vehicle.

I've located a set of the correct type on ebay and bought them - will get fitted when they arrive.

Having had my conscience severely pricked, I bought a set of the correct VW/Audi TPMS sensor, new from Ebay for £128 and had them fitted for £20 at my local indy workshop, only needed one bead moving so didn't need rebalancing - they self-registered within 300 yards of leaving so all is well.

The workshop owner seemed gobsmacked that anyone bothered, despite knowing it was technically illegal.

As TPMS batteries only last 5 years, I fell sure that many others will be looking to sidestep the legalities when their time comes.

That is until their cars fail the MOT when they don't have a working TPMS.
