Vauxhall Zafira Gear Box

I have a Vauxhall Zafira 56 Reg car Automatic which I only bought in December 2009. But it broke down the other day and apparently the gearbox has gone on the car - the dealer has quoted me £2,500 which seems a bit steep. Do you think this is normal price, I would have guarantee on the parts as it has been work has done by the dealer? Also as I cannot prove that there was a problem with the gearbox before I purchased it I cannot do anything about it (I purchased it from a well known used car company - not the dealer). I returned it back to the used car company, when it broke down last week and they have forwarded it to the dealer, as they could not repair the problem, they have come back to me with this price to me - I dont know what to do now. Can you please give me some advice?

Too long after purchase to blame the used car dealer for the fault in this case. If it wasn't covered by warranty I think you are stuck with the £2,500 bill.
