Why are Volkswagen replacing the old 1.4-litre engine with the 1.5?

I've read a number of reviews comparing Volkwagen Group's 1.4-litre engine in SEAT cars and the Kodiaq against the new 1.5-litre engine that's replacing it. I'm confused because the performance of both engines is close and the 1.4 seems to have better torque. So why the engine change? Also does this leave cars in the Volkswagen range, which currently have the 1.4 engine, at a disadvantage to those with the new 1.5?

The 1.5 TSI has the power and torque of the 1.4 TSI, but is astonishingly smooth and refined. So yes, VWG cars with 1.4 TSI will be worth less in future than equivalent cars with 1.5 TSI. This may be a little academic because it is becoming increasingly difficult to order VWG cars with the old 1.4 TSI.
