The clutch in our Octavia failed after only 10,000 miles - should Skoda cover the cost?

The clutch in our our 2015 Skoda Octavia VRS has failed after just over 10,000 miles, which the dealer has told us is not covered under warranty. I'm well aware that clutches are considered wearing items, but in many years of driving I've never known a clutch fail after 10,000 miles. Furthermore, we originally reported an intermittent slipping issue to the dealership at the first service (5200 miles), but when we picked the car up they had only carried out the chargeable work and told us to bring it back again. We have now been presented with a potential bill for nearly £900 to have the clutch repaired, which the manager told us should actually be nearly £1200 but they are knocking three hours labour off as a goodwill gesture. Neither Skoda UK, nor the dealer, are willing to accept anything other than it's down to driving style and their clutches are only warrantied for six months/6000 miles. There are also other issues with the car blowing smoke while cold (we were told this is normal). There's also an oil warning light on, according to the dealer this is a sensor which shows that the oil is of insufficient quality. Funny that considering they are the ones who put the oil in there. Do we have any legal grounds to pursue Skoda or the dealer, which will enable us to get the clutch replaced for free?

Volkswagen Group only warrants its clutches for six months, and also its dampers, which are now becoming a widespread problem, the first sign of which is a fluid leak. But if it's done 10,000 miles it needs an oil and filter change anyway. In my view every car needs an oil and filter change at least every year and at least every 10,000 miles whichever comes first.
