Does this Vauxhall Corsa SRI have a gearbox fault?

I've been for a test drive in a 2004 Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 SRI with 63,000 miles, and noted a faint whirring noise when I eased off in all gears. When I depress the clutch the noise stops. The car is 100 per cent apart from this. I described this to the garage, who said it was down to mileage and they weren't prepared to fix it pre-sale. They described it as the "First Motion Shaft Bearing". Should I walk away or is it something I can live with?

That reads like a pretty accurate description to me. You could add some transmission oil additive such as STP and find that, though the bearings still whirr a bit, the box will last for years. Better still, have the transmission drained and refilled with synthetic transmission oil. That said, it is a negotiating point. You should be able to knock something off the price because of it.
