My Y-reg SLK is suffering from rust problems. Would Mercedes-Benz repair it?

My Y-reg Mercedes-Benz SLK is starting to become very rusty. It started at the boot handle, and is now affecting all sills. Someone told me that this is a fault associated with Y-reg Mercedes-Benz models because of inferior steel, and that it might be repaired for free because it's a common problem. Does that sound likely?

It should be covered under the 30-year Mobilo warranty, but Mercedes-Benz has now restricted this cover to eight years and that excludes a Y reg. It's worth asking, but prepare to be disappointed. If the car has been serviced outside Mercedes-Benz dealerships you will be.
