My Skoda Superb's oil pump has failed - should Skoda cover the repair?

I purchased a Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI brand new from a dealer in 2007. The car is now out of warranty. After I bought it I later found out that the model in question had an oil pump issue, and with 38,000 miles on the engine, and out of warranty, the oil pump duly failed. The car has been serviced twice by an independent garage using genuine Skoda parts and oil. I have contacted the Skoda head office but they are rejecting my claim as the car is out of warranty, but my car hasn't reached the 60,000-mile limit. I feel that Skoda have sold me a car knowing that it is possible the oil pump would fail. They have offered goodwill, but that is only because I have bought four new cars from them. The car is financed through Skoda finance and has 18 months left of payments. Can you please advise?

You could attempt to sue the supplying dealer for supplying a car "not of satisfactory quality" in that it failed with a known fault and you were not warned of this known fault. But you would have to restrict this to the cost of the repair. The dealer might escalate it to the cost of the car, and if it is worth more than £35,000 that takes it out of the small claims track and into the main county court, where action could easily cost you £10,000 or more with no guarantee of success.
