Reverse gear in our Citroen C4 Grand Picasso has been damaged - could my wife have caused this?

My wife put our Citroen C4 Grand Picasso in reverse gear on our drive, and as she started to move backwards there was a loud bang and the car shuddered. She checked she had not hit anything, started up again and drove off. The upshot is that the dealer, on checking a reported clicking noise thereafter in the gearbox, stripped it out and found that three teeth on the reverse gear were slightly burred. Citroen UK have refused a claim under the warranty, citing driver error, and remarked they had never seen this before. Is it possible my wife did cause this?

It's only driver error if she put it in reverse while driving forwards. Tell them to fix it, you'll pay, then take the matter to the small claims track of the county court. I wonder if the electric parking brake refused to disengage, or if she didn't put it into gear properly. That latter possibility is the dealer's only defence.
